In general, I've never been a great fan of convertibles as the top covers are $$$ "consumables" --- plus, I don't live in a climate where the top-down driving season lasts very long.

However, I'm considering adding a 355 Spider to my garage --- mainly because I've come across a "bargain" example. The car is a 1999 model year.

So, I have a few questions for past and current 355 Spider owners about their cars' tops.

    1) Are the covers and mechanisms reliable / durable?
    2) What types (and frequencies) of maintenance service can be expected to keep everything in working order?
    3) What costs are involved with such maintenance?
    4) What is the typical lifetime of the cover --- how long before it is shot and needs replacement?
    5) What is the availability and cost for replacement covers?

    Thanks all,
    Dave

    1) no!
    2)Keep fluid full.
    3)pretty cheap
4)If i had to take a guess i say 10 years depending on weather etc.
5)Just had mine done, with after market top at ferrari ? $ 3000.00

I'm not implying that everybody has the same problems , just from my experience.

I would also add that the leather in the convertible cars gets dried out a lot faster than the leather in the Berlinettas (windows up) and with the toneau cover, there is a lot more of it to clean and treat.

My roof has been reliable. I had the cover replaced nearly 2 years ago. I cycle the roof nearly every time I drive it and always store the car with the roof up.

    Beware of a cheap Ferrari.

My top has worked perfectly during my ownership. I top up the fluid every 18 to 20 months, that's all. The previous owner allowed the fluid to get low and damaged two of the rams, which had to be replaced.

    1. My car's previous owner had the top down all the time even in storage. That seemed to screw the mechanism up so I had that serviced and fluids all topped up. Now I cycle it at least once a week and keep it with the top up. All is well and she works flawlessly.
    2. Just check the fluids and lube the joints.
    3. Very little.
    4. Mine is a 13 years now. All is good except for 1 very small pinhole on the top corner near the pillar where the top frame folds. Waterproofing still holds. Its just the joints that leak a little.
    5. Don't know but reckon at least $2k up. I'm budgeting for up to $4k.

Mine was faultless until the passenger side potentiometer failed! An independant specialist will diagnose the problem for a much smaller cost than the main dealer so there is less of a worry, I swapped it out myself and got it reset.

Topless is definitely the way to go :)

Don't let top issues keep you from buying the most beautiful car in the world. If you can afford general maintenance on a V8 Ferrari, then you should be OK with that.

Curious. What do you use to lube the joints? I am concerned a light oil will drip on the interior leather and carpet.
Mine appears to hang up a bit when closing on the driver’s side. I simply use the emergency switch even though my top system works fine. Easier to fold the seats forward and raise or lower than all the bull the standard switch operation puts you through.

I do use a light oil to do the joints but with a rag to catch the drips. Was thinking of using grease but that would be way too messy. With the oil, so far no drips at all.
