I started shaving with a DE; went through a few vintage Gillettes, Merkur HD, Merkur Slant, etc., ended up with a '48-50 Gillette SuperSpeed with red-pack Personna blades as a "daily shaver".

That's before I got into straights, and I can not see myself using a DE again unless I'm in a real hurry. The learning curve is MUCH greater, but the results are worth it, IMO. My favorite straight so far has been a 5/8 Joseph & Allen Sheffield with bone scales.

After experimenting with hundreds of soaps and creams, I've settled on Penhaligon's creams and D.R. Harris soaps as my favorites. There are much less expensive alternatives that work just as well, however; J.M. Fraser's for a great cream comes to mind if you don't mind the lemony scent.

As for brushes, I've been through a couple but settled on a 24mm QED Best Badger. They're very similar to Charles at QED's Savile Row line, but much less expensive and extremely well-made. I can not say enough about dealing with Charles of QED; a real gentleman that offers top-shelf service.

If you have any questions, let me know. I used to post over at Badger & Blade, as well.

    Thanks for the links.

I was just thinking of ditching my Braun Razor because it just can't get the hairs on my neck. I am worried about rash and burn with the blade but the forums look very helpful and look forward to getting into this.

Yes, been wetshaving for a long time. Get a much cleaner shave, and the blades last longer than your usual grocery store razor.

Don't know why anyone would every use a Gillette razor blade - rip off.

Will post pics of my setup.

you kind sir know what's up. glad to have a fellow enthusiast on the boards

well if you enjoy taking your time for the preparation, brush and umm rinsing then sure why the hell not haha

    ________________
Here's a few things to consider.....
    - no one loves to shave the way we are thought but with traditional shaving its becomes a different game...therein lies the "hobby"

    - cost is a major factor in switching to traditional shaving, i personally rather pay a few dimes for a blade (buy in bulk) that i can use for at least 4 shaves rather than 4 bucks for those expensive Gillette cartridges.

    - with traditional shaving you can acquire specific tools for your skin, beard, sensitivity etc. As opposed to buying in the store a one size fits all shaving remedy. There are literally hundreds of creams, soaps and gels made to every skin type. There is also a variety of blade brands, with various edges for sharper more precise shaving. I'm talking about a tailored kit for you personally. I was explaining this on another board that many traditional shavers actually get such a close shave they are able to shave the night before and still stave off their 5 o'clock shadow the next day. I actually shave every other day.

    - this is a new thing for me that i have been using for only a few months now and it makes a world of difference! you save a good bit of money in the end, and believe it or not shaving can become more pleasurable....watch a few of the vids above and who knows you might turn something you dreadfully hate into something you don't mind..maybe even like

    What's next?

    The art of nosehair removal?

    Vintage collector toothpicks?

    History of waffle irons?

    Garbage bag connoisseur?

Museum of staples and paper weights?

    BTW...all in good fun. ;)

I don't shave :D My aunt and uncle run a Laser Hair Removal clinic and I had the zap my face... Hurts like a ***** at first but well worth not having the hassel of shaving. Although I still have to get follow up treatments every so often (once a year or so).

hahaha....he should have known that if there are shaving enthusiasts then there would be toothpick aficionados.

Seriously though, I love the straight razors but only use one on certain occasions.
