Marc here is part of the email the guy sent ''The bora was green with a stainless roof which was the first one he bought. The khamsin was a maroon/burgundy colour. They were both nice cars, although I did like the khamsin with its unusual shape. Although I can still remember the bora did handle brill with the mid engine set up. I quite often look to see if any are for sale, maybe in a few years time?? My dad sold the khamsin in 1986 from memory'' The other guy spoke of a Black Khamsin which he thought was X reg. I can find out more on both soon It was Balmoral castle we went to. You are not normally allowed in by car but we got permission! Will check video for roads, there are lots like it in scotland! Paul
Hi Everyone Just stumbled across this thread, wasn't expecting to find it in FChat. My Khamsin is currently being restored, pictures of which I'll post as soon as I can! Paul, I didn't get a chance to see you at the breakfast club - I was in my Shamal on the grid, but you'd gone by the time I'd done a few rounds and had a bacon sandwich. I didn't get a chance to go up to go up to the house, but it was nice to see the Khamsins down at the track. It was a shame the 2 events clashed and the rally would have been much better attended if people had been made aware what the hell was going on! My friend , a Maserati Club member, was turned away by the Maserati 'security' going up to the house in his Integrale - he also works for Emblem Cars, a very well respected independent who services god knows how many Masers, including many from the club!!! Regards Doug
Hi Doug It's a real shame i didnt get a chance to meet you as it would have been great! We had 10 plus khamsin owners at the house 8 with cars! I agree the double booking was unfortunate and not explained. I was advised to come up early before 945 and that it would take me 15 minutes! We werent allowed to park with the other cars booked on the rally which I thought was sad. What was very annoying was that there were no public toilets avaiable at the house for the event! I am writing to lord March and the club about that. Some of us have disabilities and such an ommision is very bad! Real shame I didnt meet you If you ever up in gods chosen country and city ( glasgow scotland!) please get in touch to come around! Paul
I certainly will do Paul! On another note, I'm in two minds as to what colour I should repaint my Khamsin - it was originally Luci di Bosco(excuse the spelling) and was resprayed your colour (Oro?), but it's a blank canvas now!! I was originally intending to keep it totally original, but as much as I love the chocolate brown(and the '70's in general!!) I don't know if could live with it every day. Whatever happens it will be an original period Khamsin colour I think. I'd like to throw this open to the forum - answers on a postcard please!!!
By the way Paul, did Mike Wheeler send you the engine rebuild info you wanted (I'm assuming it was for you!!)
Hi No didnt get engine rebuild info from Mike! Hadn't asked ofr any but am sure Mike would pass on advice with my luck with cars! lol If you do have info on khamsin engine rebuilds may be good to know as may think of doing mine possible next year Colur wise I have been looking at some of the old mags and a few with chocolate brown ones. Was a great colour but to be honest i think it loos best in Burgandy or silver! A lot of silver ones about as our dutcha nd german friends will say! If you need any copies of oln mags with colour pics let me knwo, I think i have most of the UK ones Paul
If you've got the Motor magazine with the Khamsin on the front cover, there's a chance this could be mine?- mine was a late 76 car and they're can't be many RHD ones in that colour. It would be great to find out - anyone know the serial number of that car??
Hi all: Am swamped with a HUGE job so can't do anything until late tonight or tomorrow. best regards, Marc
I would always choose the original colour. And Luci di Bosco looks great. With beige leather. Choosing the colour is one thing, trying to get the colour exactly right (= original) is the next, time-consuming, step, but in the end the effort is worth it, I think.
Doug which motor road test? There was one in june 1975 reg HGM 22N very odd reg no as GM was motherwell where I was born and brouht up! The car would have been original 74/75 as N was from that period That car was odd as it had no chassis plates on the arches abd was a series 1 car The second Motor road test was in sept 1980 and the car is reg 6 or 845 DM it was a series 2 car. I don't have the cover but I guess it's gold with beige interior The autocar test was on nov 1978 and a series 2 car MAR 10 being chocolate brown with beige That car was also tested by car magazine Hope this helps Paul
Hi Doug and welcome. You had been in touch when you bought no "stole" the car a couple of years ago, you were very lucky there, one of the last truly inexpensive ones. I have no deisre to see the prices driven up, just to see more cars in use and less of them languishing. I have info on your car, AM120341, from Andy and Walter: Data from Andy Heywood: 30 December 76 MTC UFK 16 R Brown met, manual Bonney Car owned from nearly new by Patrick Martin, says that car was MTC demonstrator and registered MAR10 Sold in early 80’s Michale Bonney current, query sold to Maserati UK? W Baumer info: AM120.341 1977 bronze/crema, RHD, series 1 seats, Jan. 20.,1977 first registered in UK 1977-81 with three unknown owners in the UK April 1.,1981 with Patrick Martin -??/UK March 3.,1987 with John Jorgensen -??/UK (reg. UEK 16R) (from June 29.,1987 registration changed to FSV 160) July 28.,1993 with Michael Bonney -??/UK, payed GBP 25.000 (reg. changed on June 30.,1999 to WGT 287R) May 17.,2002 with Rupert Wilkes. -??/UK, paid 15.500 GBP ---- I hope it helps! So...perhaps this is the car in the article I just referred to in the other thread... Have to get back to work. best regards, Marc Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
The chocolate brown one reg 'Mar10' was used in the Autocar test and was the cover car for that and also the one used by Car magazine for one of it's tests in august 1977 by LJK Setright. I have both articles if you need them scanned and sent Paul
Paul It's the Nov 78 Autocar which I've got with maybe mine on the cover. Any chance you can scan me the other test?
Marc I thoguht I had seen the silver Khamsin at autoitialia last year just dug out the pics and is reg AFG 341S which was a silver auto I spoke to the guy todya abouth the Scottish Khamisn the guys nme was Morris. It was burgandy manual car t'reg' which is about 78/79 and was owned by the guy for about 5 years from early 80's until he sold it to ta car dealer called Prosser who owned various franchises in Glasgow Will get full reg soon. he bought it with about 12000 miles and drove another 5000 approx with it over the 5 year period He had a Green Bora before that. I will get detials of the black one soon Paul Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks Paul: the car in your photo here is: K 339 Hong Kong Tomas Lo Supposedly only K in HK May have ended up in Australia later, no wrong. Heywood data: AFG 341 S Brown met, black auto Nick H-W Hong Kong for a number of years, in 1988 owned by Thomas Lo, brought to UK by current owner in 1995. End of data quote. It was seen by Bart from Holland in Hong Kong in 1992 (bedankt!): photo of car in garage shown here....funny that the Citroen BX next to it was also designed by Gandini and is about the same color... That car was not in fact the only Khamsin in Hong Kong: there is in fact a Khamsin in Australia which I gather comes from Hong Kong: K 353 Dilip Sen Aus. AM120.353 1977, bronze/black, auto., 1977 delivered new to Hong Kong? 2000 with Dilip Sen -Perth/Australia So this matches Bart's photo too...which is it?! Hmmm. It is no longer that colour though: it is in a sort of Burgundy now. Featured in VCM issue special on Khamsins in letter section, had diff noises. You say T reg Paul....Could PET 2X be the registration of the Burgundy car you mention? Thanks for your investigations! best regards, Marc Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi Marc, PET 2X was featured in Classic & Sportscar March 1989 edition. At that time owned by Perry Aldred who lived in London. According to the club listings I think it is still owned by him, unless things have changed recently. Maybe Andy Heywood can confirm for you. I heard of a Burgundy Khamsin that came up last year in the club listings. It had been off the road for 10 years due to a failed brake line. It was up for under £10K and had already been sold when I called the owner. From memory it was also in the Glasgow area - maybe the same car Paul mentions ?. I'll see if I can find the listing to see if there was any more information on the car. Incidently, I'm tempted to change the colour of my car from silver to burgundy if I do go down the path of a total strip down. Dougie, as a matter of interest whose doing the work on your car? Cheers Bal
The guy with the burgany car is going to the states tomorrow so wont get pics for 14 days or more I think the cylinder head gasket in mine has finally given big style! was on a scottish car run yesterday and did about 200 miles of great scottish a roads. Highlight was chasing a Noble for about 20 miles along nearly deserted roads. I had a 'moment' when the n/s rear locked when the noble braked suddlently for a damp leaf covered corner at about 60(!!!!! the legal limit in scotland, so I couldnt have been going 50% faster) and the back end went a bit! The guy in the noble was amazed at such an old car keeping pace for so long! Was my first chance to really let it flow on a good road. Very impressive! anyway car over heating a bit and using water! I suppose after 3000 miles in 6 weeks of hard use that wasnt going to be a surprise! I would speculate that at 85-135, 50 mile cruise it would be a stable car and easily capable of the 160 claimed, although we cant go over 70 here! Paul xxxx
Hello Bal: Thanks for the info. PET 2X Perry Aldred's car is AM120425 Maroon cream manual unknown Owned in 1990 by Perry Aldred, featured in Classic & Sports car, article by Martin Buckley on drive up to Scotland, Andy Heywood seemed to say it was a good car and it seemed good in the article text and photos. The car was actually also used in another article, in Classic cars May 1988, a comparison with other GT cars on and near Silverstone: Iso Lele, 308GT4, E type, Porsche Turbo and Aston Vantage in which all owners drove each others cars. I scanned a couple of photos of it. Thanks for any further info you can dig on up the burgundy car. Speaking of color and belatedly answering Doug's question about color choice in my humble opinion there are too many silver Khamsins. I don't wish to sound disparaging (uberhaupt nicht!), I have nothing against the color per se, just not one of my favorites. Burgundy works very well on a Khamsin. Of course original color should be kept but often times a car has been color changed but some colors like luci del bosco are hard to live with: ask Miura owners whose car has been color changed 5 times in typically hard lives and face outrageous original colors. My favorite colors for a Khamsin (not that my opinion matters) are fly yellow, with light gold catching up fast, then verde pino, navy blue. After that I would like to take a long look at one in rosso scuro (not original) and light blue... Paul: I hope your car is ok: mine always used some water so I just added some before each new day, although I never drove beyond 200 miles and of I would have had to examine the issue more closely ahead of time. When I had the radiator and water system flushed a lot of sludge came out and that was deemed to be the cause by an excellent mechanic who really knows these cars. I can't remember if you had yours flushed or not. Anyway your are doing it the right way as opposed to so many who won't drive their cars if the clock does not work or the ashtray is full (gently teasing someone in Colorado here the only way to sort out a car is to drive it and eventually you will have sorted out any issues and it will be ready for a cross continental drive! I think you bought a really good car and it has found a good owner! best regards, Marc Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I used to like these articles where owners drove eachothers cars and commented. What were the various comments on the K? Any possibility to scan it?
Hi Marc, Not wishing to sound as if I'm nit picking, but the article where Martin Buckley drove to Scotland was in fact in car MGJ 101Y, chassis # 445. That car was finished in Rame, but for many years I always thought it was burgundy as the pictures in the mag had a colour cast. It was only when I saw the car at NEC that I realised my mistake. Since that article it has changed hands a few times and was for sale last year. I agree, there are too many Silver cars around, and my love affair with the model started out when the restoration of a burgundy car was covered in the short run mag (offshoot of Car) called Supercar Classics. That was when Omicron restored Jonathon Whalleys car registered 200 BOO. Boy did it look wonderful in that colour. But before I can start on the car I have to complete my other jobs around the house so maybe next year. RHD chassis 435 which was for sale in Zimbabwe I think last year was finished in Burgundy and is one number increment from my car (433). Cream leather and red carpets from memory. Perry Aldred's car I remember as being unusual in that it had walnut on the dash, glovebox, and centre console. Plus the switches around the stereo looked a lot different to those in my car and others I've seen. Question to all Khamsin experts, anyone know what is the red push button switch near the speedometer on the dash for? Cheers Bal
Hello Bal: You are most correct on the Buckley article car in Classic & Sports Car: I will go stand in the corner now Don't have that issue here and that note came from an old file which shows the value of verification! Yes I have all issues of that Supercar Classics article which was in six(!) parts. Photo below, it is AM120351. I posted this photo here over a year ago. The car had been left to rot outside in tall grass when Whalley had what appears to be a huge driving ban and within just a few years had rusted badly... I have someone on the case of 435 in Zimbabwe will report when he does (hint hint!) There was a car in the US which had an elaborate fine wood dash (it was photographed in VCM magazine) but it has been removed. Another car (in the northeastern US) got a wild Ostrich interior! Both were "homemade" far from Modena. Rearranging switches is not that rare a topic for Khamsins as the dash is a bit messy. Someone said the positioning of each switch was decided by dart throwing from 30 feet The red button is for warp speed US and Euro cars have different small lights and so forth can you take a shot of it and post it? Will try to help. I am sure if I don't know someobody will. best regards, Marc Image Unavailable, Please Login
Here you go Jack: I only scanned the relevant section though: the introduction mentions things you already know and the other missing text is about the other cars so below is the entire section on the Khamsin, driven by the owners of the other cars in the group test. best regards, Marc Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
