Hi guys Here a post from the 308/328 section which I entitled "Turning Traitor": Well...time to turn traitor... I drove a 355 spider on Saturday and, without mincing words, it makes my 328 feel like an absolute torpid toad. I can NOT believe HOW much better a car it is in every way...and the sound is absolutely IN. SANE. The acceleration, throttle response, handling...I might as well be driving a 328 covered wagon by comparison. Very respectfully, how ANYONE could possibly want to spend 60-65K on a "pristine" 328 over even a "driver" 355 is beyond me. The only reason I don't have a 355 is the fear of the cost of repairs...which I guess is why someone would want a 308/328 over a 355, after all. What a great car. For those of you haven't driven one...don't. It'll ruin you, as I have been ruined. Cordially, Benedict Arnold
Why would anyone want a 328 instead? a) They are NOT into Toyota MR2 looks perhaps, and want Ferrari style to go with their Ferrari? b) 328 is a classic that is pretty much fully depreciated and about as reliable as a Ferrari can be? 355 are still going down in price, if you haven forbid....actually drive them! c) When something does go wrong with the 328, it wont beat the snot out of your wallet mercilessly like the 355 can, so much so it could total enough to buy another "drivers" car of greater performance than a 328, but of a different make, in cash, giving you the best of both worlds. d) You also don't have to buy cases of hair gel to drive a 328, or worry about getting your weekly pedicure e) All of the above and Goth can tell you all about it, and I'm sure he will
I. LOVE. DRIVING. MY 3 5 5 ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oIVpg_rHRg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLsxptt6tJw Ahhhhh....the SOUND!!!!!!
Maybe he drove an F355 lately and actually liked it! Now he's in shock and decided to just keep quiet...
Hey Scott, this is no surprise to me..haha Upon your return from that test drive and as you're pulling into the winery parking lot, Jeff and I knew from the big grin on your face that you were sold! BTW, you think that sound is INSANE?? That was only stock exhaust on Jeff's car. Just wait 'til you hear an F355 with Capristo at 8,000rpm Good luck searching for your F355.
I'd like to hear from someone who got 'stiffed' with having to pay out-of-pocket for new 355 Headers and Valve Guide/Head repair in regards to how great the 355 is compared to the 328.....lets see some receipts!
Replace sticky interior parts......$2000. New Headers..........................$4000. New Valve-guide/Head rebuild....$6000. Having the best looking and best sounding regular production road going Ferrari.....Priceless! Yes, lets see those service receipts!! Edit: just realized it's my post# 360. But no 360 for me...long live my 355!!!
Hey Patrick I DID hear that Carpristo at 8K! I was behind you for a good deal of our drive; this only adds about a thousand gallons of fuel to my fire! LOL!
The 355 is a hell of a car -- faster than I am as a driver. But quite honestly the 328 is timeless, balanced and has everything except for modern high performance credentials. But, the 355 also lacks modern 0-60 credentials. I don't know if you've looked over the latest Porsche 997 brochure, or Mercedes AMG brochure, but there is a lot of commoner, modern hardware that would spank any of these old Ferraris and pretty much leave them in the grass on a hairpin. For the same money, I would personally buy another 328, and I would actively seek out another of the best ones. Among post-Daytona Ferraris, there just isn't a better car to own and actually drive. The 355 is faster and sounds great, but IMHO the technology is slipping into obsolescence, and the interior is caught in the unfortunate trough between classic and modern. I.e., old ABS, old engine management software, old F1 paddle shifters, old power tops, old airbags, old digital displays, black plastic, etc., are less desirable to me than no ABS, simple Bosch K-Jet, leather, a manual gearbox, a classic targa, etc. With regard to Scott's point, if you're mesmerized by the additional performance, there are many, many better cars than either the 328 or 355. As someone who has owned both a 328 and F355, I can state that each car has its own unique characteristics and qualities. If I were forced to pick the best, all-around "starter" Ferrari it would be the 328. However, the F355 beats it in all respects. Yes, an F355 can be very expensive to own. However, once properly sorted - problem solved. I plan to keep my F355 forever. IMO, it will become one of the most sought after modern Ferraris in the next 15-20 years. The looks, performance and sound are just fantastic. EDIT: A challenge to the skeptics - Please find me a single Ferrari that has ever received such universal praise from the motoring press, former professional drivers, Ferraristi, and general public alike.
Replace sticky interior parts......$2000. -- Err $12.62 New Headers..........................$4000. -- Err $1000 + one course in welding at the local community college.
I agree the capristo does sound mighty fine. heres a favorite video of mine from utube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqRNLJL9uEc Hope this adds even more fuel
Fantastic thread!!!!! ........ the 355 is the best machine of its time by far!!!! As for issues ................ those are just there to keep the 'whining wusses' away ......... as has been said many many times ........ the 355 is absolutely not for the faint of heart ....................
Thank you for sharing....haven't seen that clip before. In comparison, the exhaust note from that 993 C4S (or C2S ?) is so lame....
OK. Now I have been totally sold on my first F-car as a late 80's 328...and then I had to listen to the youtube clip of the 355 flyby with the Capristo. Made my hair stand on end and made me shiver...am I now looking for a 355???? That clip is magic Thanks!
the 355 is one of the best ferrari's but the 328 is also a very beautiful car. keep the 328. i had a black with black 89 rego NERO regret selling it.
+355 ......... Another video from the same 355 ............. the owner is a great guy that used be on here all the time ......... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts50AXdWTcY&feature=channel all v8 ferraris before and after the 355 ................ are simply just cars ............... there is nothing like the sound of individual throttle bodies at 8749 RPM ........................
