Just some thoughts from another thread on what defines an exotic... What are your thoughts on Aston Martins? I'm not sure, but I consider them very special and a level above Porsches, but sub-Ferrari.

    Not exotic IMHO.

Super Luxury. As are Bentley, Rolls Royce, and Maybach.

    Depends what is is?

How do you define an exotic automobile?

Like art, it is if you see it that way.

It's not exotic, although I agree with Simon^2, they are special since they are also hand-built if that counts for anything :)

I think Aston, has it both ways, they make a entry level car (the vantage), which it not what I would call exotic and cars like the DBS and the whatever that million plus car is, which are exotic, and truly hand built. I have my sights set on a DBS, and they seem to be taking longer to drop in price than I thought, but I am waiting.

    :)

    That is very high praise!

    Nope...

    Mmm... DB5...

    +1!

    :)

Yup. I consider the speed instruments as art in the new Astons :p

Most of them are... But handbuilt is a strong point... Although I think todays production is more like semi handbuilt. Would love to see a video of current range's production methods at the factory!

    Semi handbuilt?

DBS & One-77 are definetley exotic! One-77 is a hypercar in the Enzo/Zonda/Koenigsegg league...

I consider older Astons exotic and new ones beautiful. In the late 50s and the 60s you either got a Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini or an Aston and as a kid I could not wait to see the new ones at the NY auto show.

Where could you go in the late 50s to get a Lamborghini?

Oh - I get it. He meant either the tractor or the refrigerator.

Yeah, I know that Lamborghini automobiles were not until the 60s. Basically stating during a time frame from the late 50s to the end of the 60s these were your choices for an exotic, IMO. I am fully aware of the origins and the why of Lambos being brought into existence.

Now back to the show, I still believe Aston Martins were exotic when David Brown (hey another tractor guy) was heading the company.

Up to the DB6, Aston was exotic and bespoke.

With the DB7, the Ford-Jaguar corporate influence became obvious. The first Aston Martin I sat in was a DB7, and frankly it felt like a piece of junk.

    Sweet!

Lamborghini refrigerator: From hot to cooled in 3,7 sec's...

Hmmm didn't know about the change of era in the 60s... Must read more about Aston history.

    :)

    ...because?

Oh well, I'm not even gonna start on which Ferrari's felt like pieces of junk to me. But no denying, early DB7s were pieces of junk!

    :D

I believe the 70's - late 80's cars are an enigma of sorts.

A soft heavy hand built luxurious muscle car, with exotic components.

It is a niche market car.

To me, exotics almost apply to Italian cars like Ferrari, Lambos...Aston, well, to earlier ones may be but no British cars are closed. Perhaps the Bristol or Jensen. Aston is too Jaguar/Ford related IMO still. Am I not correct in tha they still share the same part bins??

The pre-DBS Astons had fantastic coachwork, performance on par with Maserati and Ferraris of that period but with the build quality only a Rolls could compete with. I think that's pretty exotic.

I can say this much, I went looking to buy a DB9 coupe with a gearshift, and it was a lot harder to find one of those (I was told that only a handful go up for sale each year), than it would have been a 430 or a 360. So if exculsive is part of your definition.
