Should Porsche:

  1. Kill the 911 and channel development money into the Boxster/Cayman to make it a higher end car?

  2. Keep the 911 as the luxury GT; channel money into the Boxster/Cayman as the high end sports car?

  3. Continue to make uber-versions of the 911, because it is THE Porsche?

  4. Ignore polls on FChat, where the brainwashed think mid-engined is how God would build a sports car?

Porsche Motorsport makes no bones about their position to not support any Cayman-based efforts. It seems as though they shot themselves in the foot by building a better (racing) platform than the 911 and not allowing themselves to use it. Lighter, mid-engine & longer wheelbase...hard to believe it would be more suited to the track than a 911.

Here's the Cayman you referred to. Imagine if they ran on competitive rubber instead of those Hankook bricks.

You can call the new Porsche anything you desire, but the new 911S or GT3 is still quick when driven by someone who knows what they are doing.

I know two people with track experience with both the 911 and Cayman S. One is a multiple SCCA nat'l champ. Both say the Cayman handles better. This only refers to the car's balance, response, etc. and does not necessarily translate into faster times. I've only tracked the Cayman myself. My only comments would be that it handles and drives beautifully but my gut is that Porsche left it a little soft on purpose.

to discontinue the 911 is just wrong! Though it almost seems like porsche has always wanted to with all the models they've introduced trying to do so. Somebody has to provide the world with a rear engined sports car and it should be porsche

Based on this poll, Porsche have decided to continue making the 911, so no worries.

If only they had built a GT1 type car instead of the Cayman, but maybe that's what the Cayman is.

If they put the same engine in the Cayman as the 911, would the Cayman beat the 911? Do we basically have a better car, waiting for a equal engine?

The only cog in the works is the fact that..... 911 is "royalty" and Cayman is just a "peasant".... so Porsche's base-costumers won't even listen to the argument. Reminds me of the children's fairy tale about the King's New Clothes.

The Cayman was meant to be an entry level car. They made it too good. Funny problem to have. LOL

I own a Cayman S and I think it would probably take some suspension tuning on a par with the 911 as well as more power to "beat" a 911, but no doubt Porsche could do it if the chose to. In any event, the Cayman is a terrific product in its own right even if it is a peasant.

    Mark,
No offense taken. You would be surprised by some of the negative comments I've gotten from car buddies for not buying a 911, or maybe you wouldn't be surprised.
