I bought a 308GTSI out of Texas where they do not need to meet smog like we do in Califoria. All of the Air pump equipment was stripped from the engine.

So I need to find a drive pulley and key and securing nut for the engine, tensioning support arm, securing hardware, drive belt, smog air pump, and hoses.

    Can any one help ?

The air pump is a standard GM air pump (or at least mine was), pulley you will have to find, bracketry can be made or found, it isn't a complex bracket. I would suspect that GM reversion valves will work also, hose is hose.

Yea, I'll help if TRutlands cannot assist..

Check and see if your nozzles are still in the head and steel tubing, buying the whole system will be a LOT of money!

It's not hose the air rails at the head are metal tubing manifolds...worst case I'll strip a car and try to get you going...

Welcome to the board by the way!

Depending on where you are, probably Gary Bobilief or Brain Crall would be the guy to find!

The state cannot make you put on a device that is no longer available. You need to

    1. call the dealer to ask for a pump, they will tell you it is no longer available
    2. Take it to a smog tester, they will fail you for lack of airpump
    3. Ask for a referee test station, they will send you there.
    4. He will fail you again, and he will tell you how to apply for an exemption.
    5. You will be sent some paper work to fill out. given a couple places to call. You will need to call those recycler places and ask for a FERRARI pump, not a GM pump. They will tell you that the Ferrari pump is NLA, and they cannot supply you a used one. You do not have to install a GM pump.
    6. They will send you some paperwork to certify that the pump is NLA.
    7. You will need to go back to the referee station with the paperwork, they will now retest, and then pass you on an exemption.

You will want to do all the missing equipment at once so you only have to go through this process once. If they have any of the used smog equipment, you have to buy it and install it (even if there is no pump, nothing really works anyway).

    It's really that easy?

What smog emission standards would the car have to meet? No matter how much pollutants it puts out (e.g., it puts out 10X the standard for that year), it will automatically pass, because the smog pump is NLA?

Hey thanks for all the support and I would still like to get the parts if anyone has them.

The car is in the shop having all the radiator hoses replaced and a bit more when the coolant system repair is completed (next week I hope). It is in LA at the moment where the leaking hose crisis occured on the ride back from Texas(which I must say was a lot of fun untill the cooling system failed)

In two weeks time I have to travel overseas for 3 -> 9 months (duration not fixed yet) before returning to USA.

I still need to register it in the state of California before I depart for Japan in 2 weeks.
Maybe I should just register it as a non operational vehicle for now. ?

    Caveat:

i went thru this once before, at that time, you had to have the non functioning part in place to get the exemption of proving a replacement wasn't available, simply showing up without it and saying it wasn't available wasn't an allowed course of action, they may have changed the law since then, or maybe the CARB person i talked to was being *****y.

Or, you may be spot on and not having a pump in place and having proof a NLA part can't be had will work. Call first.

You bought it from out of state, it was not on there, you can't get it on there.

And he may make you do other things if you are putting out a 100x the emission. but, he can't fail you for not having a pump because the pump is NLA.

I will be very surprised if this works. I don't think the state cares if your pump is NLA. CARB would be thrilled if you threw the Ferrari in the dumpster and got a Prius. Let me know if this works, I'd love to see a copy of the state paperwork to see what it says, and also any stickers they attach to the vehicle stating the car is exempt from some portion of the test. This would really open the market to out of state 1970-era cars if this works!

It does sound too good to be true.

Particularly as to the emissions portion. I guess I could see being exempted from having some minor piece of NLA smog equipment, as long as the car still passes the emissions test. But even if that were the case, I don't think you'd be able to get the car to pass smog without the pump. It seems hard enough in Cal, even with all the smog stuff in place and working. With huge chunks of it missing . . . seems like it would be tough.

"You bought it from out of state, it was not on there, you can't get it on there." I don't necessarily see California being very sympathetic to that argument. Cal smog doesn't seem to have much problem saying "tough luck."

But I would be very interested in hearing more details. Being able to get some kind of exemption like this (from both the visual inspection, i.e., the missing part, and the actual smog test standard for emissions) would be a MAJOR loophole in the Cal smog law for lots of enthusiasts.

Or, they will very likely say:

"I am sorry sir, unless your vehicle has all the original smog equipment intact, you cannot register it in CA. The seller has the responsibility to provide you will a certificate of smog compliance before you purchase it., It doesn't matter if it was purchased out of state and the equipment is missing, you have to install it prior to registration."

You will not get a chance to even have the smog test and get an exemption for NLA parts as you will fail the visual portion of the test and no further action will occur until you pass that part.

Rather that get advice form internet boards, I suggest you call the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR), and ask them.

You can find their phone number online or in the phonebook.

    Good luck.

I moved away from CA for more than one reason, but CARB and BAR were a couple of them. They exist to ensure compliance, not to make motoring easier for classic car enthusiasts. Too bad they repealed the 30 year old exemption law in 2007 and changed it to all cars 1976 and never, other wise even my car would now be exempt.

Oh don't get me started. The state treats you like they're doing you a HUGE frik'n favor letting you smog the car.

The good news is if it's a US 50 state car, it's not horrible to pass the dyno test.

It worked for me with my 1975 GT4 when I brought it in from Florida 8 years ago when the 75 was not yet exempt. It was missing all the emission stuff including the injection rails, the pump, and associated hoses. I went through hell to get it to pass, I did have to install a stock muffler to get it to finally pass. Subsequently, the 75 became exempt and no more emission test madness was required for all those years before I sold it, back to Florida.

Whether you believe it or not is your decision! Why would I make it up? I posted my experience to help the original poster. If he or she does not care about my experience, then that too is his right.

It is very very difficult to get an old car 76-81 to pass smog in California. And, for that reason I would never buy any of those years. If you have to have carbs, get a 75 or earlier, they don't even require you to take smog tests before they re-issue the license plate in CA. That would be the best.

I bought my euro 83 qv from an F-chatter in Cali. It was titled and registered in TX when i bought it. It was not smog compliant in Cali. Boy did I learn a valuable lesson there! I eventually got it smogged and registered in Cali.

Instead of going through the hassle of obtaining all of the factory smog devices, James Patterson at Norwood Performance hooked up an electric smog pump in the right side of the trunk along with a summit racing cat. The car passed the sniffer test with flying colors. I got it smogged and registered in Cali. You might try this?

    Cheers

What test did you have to pass? Sniffer? Was it just an idle and 2,500 rev test, or was it a local dyno test?

First year it was idle and rev test no dyno.

2nd year it went to a dyno tester. (Inspection only place)

Passed both times with flying colors.

    Cheers

That's great. Doesn't sound too bad. Did you have a BAR sticker, or was your car ever registered in CA?

I bought a used GM smog pump with diverter valve on Ebay for $12.00, and it looks like the orginal. I made a bracket from an aluminum plate with a bandsaw and drill press, the original Ferrari diverter valve was still there, but it was rusted into oblivion.

The pulleys are different widths. I took an old aluminum v-belt pulley, 3/8 shaft, and bored it out to fit the Ferrari cam, now all is happy. Total cost: $12 for the pump and valve, and $11 for the v-belt.....no problem.

Now I don't have to do a tap-dance for the CARB/BAR referee, and if the smog pump v-belt "falls off" somewhere on the freeway after I pass smog, so what !

Know this! The air pump must work to provide a real smog benefit. Sounds simple right? I found out the very hard way about this. -I wasted a god awful amount of time trying to figure out why it wouldn't clean up with a fresh rebuilt pump spinning away - There's a spec in the Ferrari WSM that the pump must put out (IIRC) something like 5 - 8 psi. You can check it by connecting straight into a gauge while spinning. I got a rebuilt pump that was NOT putting out enough pressure, so poor in fact that NO air got past the check valves which require about 1/2 psi to open.

I'm attempting this right now (2010). I called Ron Tonkin Ferrari in Portland and they can get me a smog pump for only $800 - HA! I'm reading in other places that it is a GM part and you can buy one for $60 at any auto parts store. That is my hope. Anyone have any smog parts they would like to get rid of? I have a 78 308 with carbs.
