I'm looking at a car for sale which has extensive amounts of the laminated plastic "clear bra" material on it. I never liked the stuff personally. Does anyone know whether or not it can be removed? If so, is it easy to do and what is the method to use?

    Thanks

I would do some research on this. I had a bad experience recently with removal. From what I have seen you should probably use a heat gun to soften the film/adhesive along with some adhesive remover. Unless it looks damaged/worn, I would leave well enough alone.

Let the sun shine on it to warm it up. Get a single sided razor blade and just "pick up" a corner. STAY AWAY FROM THE PAINT WITH THE BLADE! Once you get it started, begin by pulling S-L-O-W-L-Y. Pull it < an inch per minute without a jerky motion. You may need WD-40 to remove spooge after you're done. The WD-40 will remove wax also, so you'll have to wax all over again when finished.

Or, you could just leave it alone...

Also disliked the clear bra that was on my car. Two summers ago I removed it, and my car looks much brighter.

My process was to park my car in the sun for a few hours. I then used an old hair drier and very slowly removed the film, pulling it back nearly 180 degrees. I also had a can of the 3m adhesive remover to clean up any adhesive that remained on the paint. The entire process took most of the day.

How about the paint? Obviously you waxed or such again but notice anything unusual there before you started?

The paint was all original, and therefore completely cured before the film was applied. The only paint the pulled away with the film were some chip touch ups. After the film and adhesive were removed I polished and waxed the area. The few small chips were touched up again.

There were many chips on the bonnet grill. Ultimately, I just had that grill repainted. I am still glad I removed the film and like the way the car looks with out that yellow film.

I had herd of issues if the area had been repainted and the film placed on the paint before it had fully cured.

Consider researching the top concourse detailer in your area ..one that has done this very operation B4..then pay him to detail it..you will be sooo proud of yourself. Just consider the expense part of "new" owner" enthusiasm.. I think that you will be so glad that you started off your new baby with pride. She'll love you for it..I hope this helps.

That is exactly what we do but we use a commercial heat gun on low (carefully). Obviously we have quite a bit of experience with racing decals too.

If the car has ever been repainted you have a high probability even if you do all the above the paint will lift as most "repaints" on the front bumper have had poor preparation of the original surface paint by sanding with the proper grit paper to give enough "tooth" for the new paint to bite/adhere to properly.

I also suggest going to a paint store (automotive) and buy a handful of "plastic" razor blades and skip the metal razor blade use. Thats where you will find the 3M Wax and Adhesive Remover as well.

try pulling the film by standing behind it. in other words, dont pull it towards you like you would a sticker. more like lifting the film upward and toward yourself as you would a bed sheet.
