I just purchased an '87 Mondial. It has 18,600 miles on it, and looks it. I was advised to change the cam belt immediatly. Is that sound advice? Can it be done without a major tune-up? Any special tools needed to keep cams and crank stationary and in correct relationship? Any help will be appreciated. I've already gotten a great deal out of this site.

If not changed in the last 5 years, change it. Birdman has a great website which gives step-by-step instructions on how to do this

Thanks lvFerraripilot. I printed the information from Birdman's site. A great source of information! In my original post, I neglected to mention that the timing belts and idler bearings were replaced at 16,500 miles, back in 2003. So, I guess it is time to do it again.

    Hey Cavaliere,

Best of luck with your new Mondi. Be sure to take some pics and post in "Let's See All Our Mondials", in the Showroom section.

    Cheers,

    Hank

When you have the belts off, check, very carefully, the condition of the cam belt drive pulley outer bearings. If one fails, it's not pretty. (Ask me how I know)

Thanks to all for your help. I am downloading as much information as possible.
In answer to SMS, I am from Tucson, AZ. I am interested in finding a local shop that can work on the car if need be. The nearest Ferrari dealer is in Scottsdale, about 120 miles away; not close enough for any emergency diagnostics.
