Central to the fine art of negotiation is misinformation: I think the conflicting reports reflect this. None of us should get our hopes up or down or anywhere near these stories as of yet.

But if I can speak commercially, I think McLaren would have itself a dream marketing team in TWO British champions. They are, after all, launching a road car division that could use the bright light these two drivers give off. The extra couple million Button might cost would be well worth it in their "British GT" branding.

But for Button's sake, if he can get an equal deal at Mercedes (nee Brawn), his career may be better off. Hamilton and him may be buddies but the issues that come with sharing a team could be tough.

I have a gut feeling that one of the Mclaren drivers will end up looking extremely slow compared to their team mate come season's end next year.

Unfortunately I think that man will be Button.

I predict Jenson Villeneuve will be crushed. But not nearly as bad as poor Heiki, who looked like a stray dog all year next to Hamilton.

If McLaren signs Button, they will retain car numbers 1 and 2 for next season, and Mercedes will have to use something in the 20s. More importantly, however, is the question of championship money. If I remember correctly, wasn't Brawn ineligible to receive Honda's 2008 championship money since they were considered a new team? Will Mercedes face the same situation for the 2010 season since they are a new team as well by the same technicality?

Nope. It's just a takeover, i think. SO, still considered an old team.

Yes, I think it is a bad idea for Brawn/Merc to lose one for there new team.

I think Ferrari will be smiling.

Kimi won a WDC from team infighting, there again thinking about it I can't see Massa lying down at Alonso's feet willingly.

McLaren is a team I certainly won't be rooting for next year: I don't like their drivers!
I really don't think that Button will hold a candle to Hamilton who is far more skilled and motivated. LH can fight with an inferior car; JB can't.

Even without Kimi, Ferrari will be my favourite again.

I hope that Alonso and Massa get on, and that the Scuderia isn't affected by drivers' rivalry.

Also, Massa's fitness has yet to be proven.

It must be mixed feelings at Brawn. New owners so no finance worries for a while, but the lost of their 2 drivers.
2010 will be like a new start all over again.

It's all lovey dovey in the beginning, as usual with the press announcements offseason. Blow a little sunshine at the sponsors and all.

But it may well be that Button and Hamilton will be able to collaborate, compete, and both succeed in some way. That bodes well for at least a WCC for McLaren.

Plus McLaren/McLaren fans will love to keep #1 and #2 for 2010 thanks to signing Button.

As an offtrack side note, I am interested to see how the "dad" factor will play out and if the two driver's fathers will add to the soap opera of F1. While it appears that Lewis' dad is more "involved", both are very supportive of their sons' racing, to put it mildly.

The way Jenson drove in Brazil shows that he has the class to compete with top drivers and why he deserved to be WDC. Unfortuately I think that Lewis in an equal car will just be too much of a handful for Jenson.

You are right Steve, the WDC always carries the no 1 on his car and his teammate is given no 2. When the reigning WDC has not raced a 0 has marked his replacement at the team he won the WDC for (0 worn by Prost in 93 at Williams after Mansell left after 92).

But I know you already know all this and you're just making a point. ;)
