As LED lights are being made in more colors and have gotten brighter they have become practical for more applications.

Many cars are now coming with LED lights that go beyond replacing traditional lights. Specifically they are mounted in areas where you could not fit a traditional bulb, or in shapes that were impractical before.

To my eye some of these applications have gone beyond the tasteful and into the realm of "Bling." Once the novelty wears off in a few years I think these cars' LEDs will be looked at as tacky.

Some of the offenders: new Audis have "eyeliner" LEDs, Porsche Turbo LED winglets, Ferrari 458 has a straight line of them going up the fender.
I think these applications look like they were added by the local "pimp my ride" shop.
To me they distract from the lines of the car and are inconsistent with the design.
    What do you think?

yet another automotive trend that will be played out like no tomorrow.

worst thing is, so far it is only the high end companies (Audi, MB, Ferrari, etc). wait until Honda/Toyota/GM catch on to this...

As brake light, LEDs are fine,
As eyeliners they simply look terrible--pure bling--which means a certain kind of people will like them.

    Not a fan....

And, my guess is it will become yet another in a long line of trendy auto design "stylistic" details that will be short-lived.

    Hi,

I have been thinking about this topic for quite some time now but didnt really know what to say becuase i think the LEDs look really nice on some cars (like the F430 for instance) but they also look a bit cheezy on MOST of the cars (definitely like the Audi A4s and A5s). So i guess it just depends on the car.

The main think i want to share with you guys is the F1 style Pit Stop flashing LEDs on this F430 in the video. The video is from Istanbul, Turkey. I have posted other videos of the guy on F-chat before but since he drives like a hooligan, people focused on the danger of such a guy in traffic rather than that PIT STOPPING light at the rear diffuser.

Enjoy and please let me know if anyone knows what that light is and how its integrated there :)

Not sure they will age all that well, other than in practical applications like brake lights.

I think it was Jeremy Clarkson who called them "little fairy lamps" on the R8.

I thought that the EU dictated daylight running lights starting soon and the automakers felt like incandescents put too much alternator strain on the car for all-time illumination. Their solution was LED's. Using them artistically or rather, imaginatively, offers new-look to their upgrades. I personally like them and can see that, in their premier use, they may look better on some cars than on others, but they are flexible enough that they will probably lend some fresh styling for years to come. I don't think they are going away, but they may move around a little.

The only LED headlights I like are the LP560-4 ones. The rest look mildly retarded.

They look nice in some cases...and not so nice on others. I don't think there's a general rule.

Well, they are more durable, efficient and reportedly faster (illuminate more quickly). The technology is a good thing.

Stylewise, give me the incredible covered headlmaps on the 250 GT California, early 246, early Jag E-Type, etc.

I have to admit I kind of dig it...

but certainly will look dated in a decade.
