I would like to swap the 5.2 set up for the 2.7 (to run catless) and get the most out of the car. 1. What are the steps to doing this?
    2. What kind of performance gains can I expect?
    3. Is this crazy/silly?

5.2 can be run catless by installing O2 simulators in the rear bungs; much cheaper and easier to convert than swapping over to 2.7...even though 2.7 is superior.

I've been told that the 2.7 is superior in performance and reliability, how exactly and why?

M2.7 has superior software that runs fewer lines of code than does 5.2.
    M2.7 is used on the F50 and 348 and 456 and 512M.
M2.7 has dual air intake MAFs; M5.2 has a single MAF chokepoint.
    M2.7 has 2 O2 sensors; M5.2 has 4.

Ok, Thanks, so what are the steps, I bought a 95 engine complete from a fellow f-chatter today and I want to put the capristo race exhaust that I bought from robbie to make a monster of a nice power oriented 355 without supercharging it

Also, isn’t the 2.7 programmable like a race ECU?

Highly programmable, but you have to burn your own chips instead of downloading the new fuel and timing tables.

If money is no object, take the motor to any Ferrari dealer who participates in Ferrari Challenge events and pay for the 5.2 to 2.7 conversion to Ferrari Challenge specs.

If money and time matter, then simply replace the rear O2 sensors with el cheapo O2 simulators, replace the cats with straight race pipes, and keep the 5.2 wiring harness and ecu.

Keep in mind that a full conversion to 2.7 will only give you 10hp out of 360. That's not even a 5% gain.

Without going to a supercharger/turbo, the easiest bang for your buck will be NOS.

The most consistent bang for your buck will be going to a race-shop-made custom lightweight aluminum flywheel, however.

I just installed such flywheel into a twin turbo monster and it turned that car into a pure BEAST! Very worthwhile mod.

Sooo if I change the wiring harness, exhaust compnonents, induction bits and remap it, what kind of HP gains could I expect? (I don't want to nos it).

+1!!!!! just get 02 simulators. You can build them yourself if you are handy or purchase them from 02simulator.com

when the 2.7 gets itself lost, you can press the red button for 10 seconds to make it forget and start all over in its learnign process.

I have personally used this several times to good effect ($$$).

Being new to this, and having a 2.7, what/where exactly is this red button? What does 'gets itself lost' refer to and what is it re-learning to good effect refer to? Coming from the BMW world I like resets...
