1995 355 Spider. Failed smog test today. Passed in every category except 1. The HC (PPM) reading was 50 at 25mph. Needed a score of 49 to pass the whole thing. Missed it by 1 point! Anyone have any easy quick fix solution or adjustment that can be made?
    Thanks.

Does that mean drive it at high RPM for a while before I test it? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Don't drive it at high RPM's only. Acceleration is the key to pumping in the extra needed gas to elevate cat temperatures. Smog techs are taught to only test warmed up cars but casual driving and idling won't warm up a Ferrari in the way that we mean.

I don't know where the heck you went but my car does the exact same thing and it passed with 50ppm HC and this is the max allowable. I figure that your car is in excess of that. You do not need 49. I am more curious why your car is so high in unburned HC. If it is stock with no chip mod, it might be a leaking injector, which would hasten the death of a cat. Mine has ND chips so that explains the richer mixture. Stock, my car was in the low 40's.

The difference between low 40's and 50 is not even the margin of error or calibration of the machine. To expect consistancy in the range of 10ppm in one machine much less from 2 different machines in different places, on different days, with different weather, different air temps, different air densities and different brands, blends or types of fuel is very unrealistic.

Took the car back for a retest today. Drove it for about 45 min. on the freeway reving up to 7000 rpm at times to get the cats hot. Went straight to the smog test only center and put it on right away. The HC (PPM) was 54 (max 49) and it failed the CO (%) also, with a 0.59 (max 0.46). Both failed at 25 mph, but passed at 15 mph. Yesterdays results with the cats cold were better than todays results with them hot? Any ideas or suggestions. I must confess, engine oil has 7000 miles and should have already been changed, but hasn't. Will an oil change increase my chances of passing?

Oil change will help by a fart but you should be looking at plugs, O2 sensors/lambda values, cats, compression/leakage now. You might request that the tech (sniff) each bank separately.

Also I was blown away how many techs were unaware of the sample hose filter.

Should be ok! Replace O2 sensors and try again or go for full diagnosis.

Are O2 sensors something I can order and replace myself? Does the owners manual cover this or do they have to be installed by a mechanic?

I have a 348 and got mine from G T car parts in Phoenix,az. 623-780-2200,they will ship to you, great guys and good prices or some have gotten them at autozone, rock auto, they are Bosch o2 sensers but I'm not home to see what the part number is but the ones from the part stores I believe you need to splice in the wires but the one from GT just plug in like the orig. on my 348 they just unscrew from the exhaust by the cats and the wire unplugs from under the air cleaner box.

    Mike,

Go see this guy. Joe san P is an excellent mechanic with general and race knowledge. He is a very valuable resource. He can make your car pass. I've known him for 20+ years. When I have questions he is often the first guy I call.

I ordered two Bosch Oxygen Sensors. Won't have them until next week. Will install and retest again next week. Thanks for all of the great advice!

If you can solder there is a thread on generic O2 sensors(65$ea). Replaced mine (front ones only) and it made a huge difference. My experience showed my 355 passed at 25mph but not 15 because of the O2 sensors. Then it failed again at 15mph becausde of what the boys are saying about not hot enough. The tech in palm springs high idled it before the 15mph test and it passed easily. Readings before high idle were 60 after were 15. I thought in the future I may just wrap cats with exhaust tape for the test. Oh ya my cats were the new hyperflows and I think they probably cool off quicker than stock. just my 2cnts

Update: Installed two new Bosch OEM Oxygen sensors as some of you recommended. Took car back for smog retest. I passed in the HC(PPM) catagory with flying colors where I failed by 1 point before, BUT failed in the CO (%) category as follows: At 15 mph 0.56 (max 0.49) and at 25mph 0.51 (max 0.46). I passed in the CO(%) category the week before! Any advice what to check next is appreciated. Thank you.

I thought you were not supposed to solder o2 sensors? Or is that a myth?
