Marcel has spent a lot of time and money researching PRA ("Pubblico Registro di Automobili" = Public Registry of Automobile) records and is not the only one to have done so. None of us have done it all. There is always more to do. Those documents give a great deal of legal ownership information and are very informative but they do not always tell the whole story and sometimes do not even record the absolute truth. It takes a lot of study to know that the information reported is actually correct in the particulars.

In this case, it would be nice to know if 0331 was indeed sold through Bernabei as a dealer. It would be nice to know if the sale date recorded by the PRA documents is the same as that in the actual sales paperwork between (presumably) Bernabei and Ed. There may be additional tidbits to be gleaned by comparing the records.

Ed, you offered 0331/EU in January of 1960 in the very entertaining magazine "MotoRacing" where you stated, "Last owner former driver Perdisa" so it is evident that you knew this. Cesare Perdisa raced mostly in Maserati (gasp!) sports cars and a bit in 250F as well. A subsequent owner of 0331/EU offered the car in Road & Track magazine for August and December of 1961 and also advertised the Perdisa connection.

Yeah, there's more but ... another time ... if there's particular interest.

PS: I just received a photo of a black ATS in Paris 1982: could that be your ex car?

Will post it (there is a Gee Tee Hoo in the photo so it is not off topic) later when I have time to resize it.

Monte Carlo rally 1966 (can't remember if that is the year for sure but think so).

That car showed up at the cavallino Classic early on with the added nose lights still on.

Ed Niles: here is the photo -sorry for the poor scan of an old photo- of the black ATS (with the GTO ex Bob Neyret next to it) taken at Thepenier the then Maserati importer in Paris in 1982. There was an incredible line up of cars upstairs and Mr Thepenier occasionally allowed yours truly then a teenager up there: there were these two, a Maserati 5000GT a Bizzarrini 5300GT and a 2 liter Bizza as well. My favorite was the Bora group 4 in the small shworoom though:)

Could this be your ex ATS Ed? Just curious. Can't have been that many in black.

These photos were sent to me by a Dutch acquaintance who happened to visit about the same time I did don't pay attention to his mislabeling from 27 years ago (bedankt bart!).

I posted a photo I took of the GTO up there in this thread a few months ago.

Bizzarrini registrar Jack Koobs de Hartog is meeting a Frenchman who was in the know back then to identify the Bizzas we will see if he has any info on the ATS.

    best regards,

    Marc

    Thanks Ed!

I assume the car towards the back in this photo you sent me (copyright to you) some months ago is therefore #2008...or?! do we have two ATs's here?

Assisduous Ferraristi will recognize the croissant charriot (and several other cars made in Maranello) to the right of center and some will identify Asa Clark who owned the Breadvan for a short time standing tall at center.

    best regards,

    Marc

Hi Marc and Happy Birthday Ed!
I own ATS chassis #2003, the Paris Salon show car in 1963; photo is from Pebble Beach 2006. Great to see a shot of it where it spent most of its early life at Thepenier's. Much of the collection, including the ATS, was purchased by Tom Price while acquiring the 250 GTO. Thanks for posting.

    Hello Tom:

I am stunned, never expected the actual owner of the car to be here, amazing!
Congratulations on owning a very interesting piece of history. We should rename this ATSchat.com:)

Regarding the line up of cars at Thepenier my understanding has always been that while Jean Thepenier was away one day his son agreed to sell the cars to another American: the two Bizzas, the ATS, the 5000GT and the GTO but that when the father came back he cancelled the traqnsaction, there was a lawsuit which is why the cars remained frozen in place complete with flat tires. Then Tom Price as you confirm came along...

Of course Thepenier went bankrupt about that time so the timing was destiny.

Pete: don't know 300S maybe not really drawn to those cars.

    Ed: thanks as ever!

    best regards,

    Marc
