Hi All. A friend and I are planning a trip to the Canadian GP this year. I have never been to the area and never to an F1 race either. I would appreciate any help or suggestions for hotels, restaurants, packages, tickets (where to sit etc). I'm just doing research now and haven't purchased anything. We plan on flying out on Friday and returning on Monday.

    Thanks in advance.

    Jim

Are you budget conscious or just looking for the best time possible?

Re. where to sit, I'd recommend one of the two hairpins, though I haven't sat at either. I have been in bronze twice (grandstand 33, boring and grandstand 22, never again!) and gold once. The gold was interesting in that we were directly across from the Ferrari pits and could see in right to the back wall. Between races there is lots of stuff going on and celebrities milling around, but as for the actual race, it's very dull. The best place for passing is the Casino hairpin.
As for hotels and restaurants, others will probably have better recommendations, but you want to be around the Crescent and Maisonneuve area.

We have been to the last 5 Canadian GP, and the hairpin is by far the best spot to watch the race, the highest braking, best chance for passing. We stayed at the Omni (downtown), but that has become too expensive for our budget, so we will look for cheaper alternatives. You want to be downtown for the big party Sat night. We grab breakfast and sandwiches and lunch stuff at a corner deli called "Mangia" at the corner of Maisoneuve and Peel, 50 feet from the Metro station. Way better than track food and the owner (George) is an F1 afficionado.
A must for dinner one night is "Steak and Frites", then we usually take a cab to Vieux Montreal (old Montreal) or little Italy for some out of the way dinners.
Montreal is a beautiful city, and the women (French/American Indian combo) are the most beautiful on the planet. The whole city goes nuts for Grand prix weekend, but be prepared for some pricey dinners if you choose to eat downtown. uniformly phenomenal food. I would suggest "Siren de la Mer" (siren of the sea) for incredible seafood (you pick out your food from the display and tell them how you want it prepared). 20 min by cab. Or try "Luca" in little Italy for Italian cuisine, then stroll around the Ferrari/Maserati car show and visit the Ferrari memorabilia in all the shops.
Man, now I can't wait to go back. Is the Canadian GP finally a sure thing or is it still conditional?

Thanks for the advice so far. I'm not sure how to answer the budget question. I don't have unlimited funds but I also don't want to be at the Super 8 motel. I certainly don't mind paying for comfort and quality but don't need extravagance either.

Nothing beats the Canadian GP for exotic spotting. I mean where else can you spot a modded MC12, McLaren F1 GTR, SLR 722, etc all within a 5 block radius of each other?

I'll be in Montreal for this FOR SURE!

Does anyone know what the Canadian GP Site will be this year? I don't know if http://www.grandprix.ca will transfer to the new promoter. I don't want to lose first dibs on my seats.

I'd personally stay at the Fairmont, it's walking distance to a few clubs and bars, nice hotel, at the train-station, integrated into the underground Mall, central location, etc. Plus a lot of exotic owners stay there since it's secure parking.

It might be a few extra bucks, but is worth it IMO.

I always stay at the Sheraton right around the corner from Crescent/Montagne hot spots.....Its $750 a night, but you'll save that amount in cab rides stumbling back at night.

$750 is not that bad.....try staying at Vogue or Queen Elizabeth, its almost double that.

If you split it between 2 or 3 guys, its pretty affordable, and within walking distance to all the major hot spots. Its a logistics nightmare staying far away from downtown, you end up spending alot more on cab rides within the weekend.

Lucas, if you do a little creative searching, you can find far less expensive hotels (125$-200$) that are just a short subway ride from the downtown core.

    750$ a night...sheeze! Pass the Vaseline. :p
