http://www.fastestlaps.com/track26.html that is my explanation for these results. seems to me that ferrari made 2 errors: they made the scud too fast, and they made the 458 to heavy. the 458 needed to be faster than the scud to be credible imho.
I dont really see how, the scud is a stripped out no luxury car. you need to compare apples to apples (430 Coupe (standard) vs 458. and that is a 2 second difference (huge) CS to Scuderia is a 3 second difference I wouldnt compare a Lamborghini LP560 with a Superlegerra
I think a more accurate explanation would be that one's a stripped out, hardcore track car lacking all amenities and the other's a GT. I also never believe comparative track times reported without citation, weather data or any information about tires (as is the case here). Tire choice alone can make a truly enormous difference in track times. Any conclusions being drawn without this information is inherently flawed.
The official Fiorano time for the Scuderia is 1:25.00, the same time as for the 458 Italia. Scuderia on sport tyres, 458 on normal street tyres. The 1:23.9 was achieved later in a test drive.
According to Ferrari the 458 will be getting a power boost in the future. That plus a more track oriented tire would certainly improve lap times. New versions of the 458 are likely to be introduced during the first 4 year period of it's life cycle. Bigger changes at the start of it's second 4 year cycle to. CH
You mean 458 replacement will get a power boost or the when its scuderia version comes out? 458 won't have an 8 year life cycle, more like 4-5 right?
Yes 8 cylinder life span is shorter than the 12 cylinders. And even though it has become more comfortable, calling it a GT is still a long stretch. It is, after all, a mid engine 2 seater with a small trunk
I think this is the case. Put some corsa's on the 458 or any of the other cars tested for a even comparison.
It is .1 second slower than an Enzo. A tenth of a second off an ENZO! That could be explained by driver error or track temp differences. You are right. Total turd. Wait till the 458 Scud/CS comes out in 3 years. It will move the bar. In the mean time enjoy a car with a broad appeal that puts out some amazing numbers while maintaining enough comfort that your SO will go along for the ride.
Ferrari says the current 458 chassis is designed to handle a power increase; that is where some of the extra weight comes from in the latest design version. Some time during the first 4 years will see more power. The expected Scuderia type version is not officially acknowledged though; just more power. As mentioned during the second 4 year cycle greater changes will be seen. The 458 has an 8 year program of development before it is replaced. CH
Yes, it's too chushy and too heavy. Please DON'T buy one. I'll get mine sooner. Then, you can tell me what an idiot I am.
It would seem to me the 458 should be faster than the 430 and the Scud needs to go up against the track version of the 458. More importantly...1 second ???? really ? Thats a big deal to some people ? This is a street car.
The journalists were given information by Ferrari about the the product cycle and that it would be 'refreshed' half way through. Other models include the coming spider version that LdM confirmed. Some of the weight difference comes from the fact that the 458 chassis is 20% more stiff than the outgoing 430 chassis was. The 458 engine makes 70 more horsepower than the 430 did and still has as much torque at 3500 rpm as the 430 did. All that extra horsepower and it uses less fuel than the 430 did. Even the 430 had different brands of tires offered. To quote Ferrari engineers you could re-engineer the chassis every year to take the most advantage of the newest tire compounds. But that isn't practical from a cost standpoint. The 599 chassis got it's turn when the HGTE package was introduced. This latest version of the 599 was something Amedeo Felisa said they would not build for the 599 when it was introduced back in 2006... CH
Ross- Why? Note in the figures you posted the 360 CS was faster than the 430. The Scud being faster than the base 458 should not be surprising. And, like someone said, those eraser Corsas make a big difference, even if they do not last too long. Also note they show the Scuderia being heavier than the Italia. Taz Terry Phillips
One thing that gets little mention in the 458 is the quick steering; only two turns lock to lock. Journalists seem to think it is an easier car to drive fast than the 430 was. It inspires greater confidence. Confidence is something you might be looking for in a car that redlines at 9,000 rpm and uses a 12.5:1 compression ratio all in a pump gasoline fueled 'street' car. CH
Yeah, so 458 will have 2 x 4 year cycles just like F355-360M-F430 which is more like 3 x 4 year program. More power sometime in the first 4 years is indirectly saying there will be a scuderia/CS version I think.
I like how they gratuitously add a Porsche to the bottom of the list. http://www.fastestlaps.com/track26.html
