OK, I'm looking to buy my first Ferrari, a 348/355. I've done some homework and have some idea of what to look for. Valve job, intake/exhaust guides, belt service, cam seals etc. If ANYONE can add to the "make sure you look for" list, bring it.
    Here's where I am,
-what is a good insurance company to use.
-If I find one out of state (I'm in Texas) can I trust when someone sez "current inspections done by dearler". I can't spend a year going from NY to LA looking at cars.
-There are 355's going for anywhere from $45k-99k, What tha???? I guess some guys are pretty proud of their cars. I'd like one around 50-55, 15k miles with up to date service. Am I too far off?
Oh yeah, I'm new here, how the heck do you "PM" someone.

Look at the boltheads on the motor. If they've never been turned, walk away. Look at the owner. If he's wearing a gold chain, walk away. Look at the tires. If they're gunked up with tire black, walk away. If the mileage is less than 100 per month, run. If the tires are cracked with dryrot, run. If the seller's crying about selling his baby, consider it. If he says he's upgrading, do a ppi. If his wife and children are dressed in rags and it's the last thing he's selling to feed his family, consider it. If he's living in it because his wife and kids already left, subtract $5000 for the overdue service, but buy it.

    For clarity

your OP suggests either 348 or 355 but your "observations" seem to be 355 only.

I suggest you drive both as they are very differant in feel. My opinion, I love the more raw sensation of the 348.

I do miss the "raw" feel of my 348 (no p/s) however, shifting my 355 above 6K and hearing that exhaust scream is pretty damn "raw" :D

Sorry, the pic at 180 is too blurry

    355 baby!! :D

    Hi Marty,

Since you are in DFW area, try to find it locally. This way you can check out the car in person instead of taking risk purchase the car from out of states.

Check out RUF in Carrollton, they had one fits your price range:

Don't forget to ask for the service records, and go through them with a fine tooth comb.

WOW, I knew this was the place to ask that question. You guys are great. Bruce, that was funny. Picture me running around the house with the laptop in my hand looking for my wife saying "honey, honey, you've got to hear what this guy wrote".
Torn to say the least, as you guys said, " the raw feel of the 348 or the new life of the 355". It's like choosing between Miss Texas or Miss California, either way.......
Thanks for the feedback guys. Again, if anyone knows someone selling either, pm me please.

Marty, welcome to f-chat! I approached my most recent 348 "hunt" a little differently, deciding to go with a car that needed its major service now rather than one that someone else had done in the recent past. Call me a "control freak", but I wanted to be in the driver's seat on this (my car is actually going in for its major at Norwood Performance today). I'm also in Frisco, so feel free to PM me if I can help in any way. Best of luck with your search! :) :)

Yep, there are certainly a lot of Mikes enjoying Ferraris in this section. Here's a poll: Mike?

Turns out that, so far, 15% of poll responding 348/355 Ferrari owners are called Mike. :D

    All the best,
    Andrew.
