Missing Laptop at Venetian in Las Vegas

Nobody "stole" from his daughter. It was her fault. It just sounded suspicious that someone who can throw money around like that on hotel rooms (a very fleeting intangible item) would be so concerned over something so minute. Why even mention dollar value? Does that makes sense? I hope so. Keep in mind that the most I've spent on a room is $100.

The only way to prove that this business is dishonest (a dishonest casino?! lol) would be to leave a laptop open on the bed, with surveillance to make sure nobody came in the room while the door was open & maid was occupied with cleaning the tub (for example). It might be as simple as someone taking it off her cart while she was busy (she didn't report a laptop because it didn't look like one) or the maid put it in the closet thinking it was a pillow & the next occupants of the room took it. Too many variables there...

 

IMO this was not a theft. She left something behind, it was a loss, not a theft. Had it happened while you were checked in, it would have been a theft.

 

I can't beleive some of the moronic responses in this thread. The guy asked for advice on how he could best retrieve a laptop that was stolen and gets a bunch of idiots telling him how to raise his daughter and how its her fault some POS employee stole her laptop. On top of that since the guy has money to stay in a suite he should quit whining and buy a new one. I feel sorry for the people that actually think this way. She made a mistake, some loser hotel worker stole it and he has every right to want his property back. Will he get it,probably not but leaving your car unlocked by accident doesn't give some low life the ok to steal your stereo. The only lesson she would get if she was my daughter is that most POS people that can take advantage of a situation will.

 

A loss is leaving your computer on a park bench and its gone when you get back to the spot. When you are a paid guest in a first class (or any for that matter) hotel, leave your computer behind and alert the hotel BEFORE any Joe public has been checked into said room and the computer is gone it is theft plain and simple.

Just saw this post. From my LE standpoint, you should NEVER give login information over the phone...it could have been the suspect impersonating the Officer in order to get all of your details. For something like that, if you're not able to respond in person, look up the Department's phone number and call them to have them verify and transfer you to the Officer.

 

No Kidding! The young corporal was so excited to have recovered it, he forgot what he was asking, at midnight .

 

A month ago I had lunch at an expensive restaurant in downtown Ft. Lauderdale. I left my expensive sunglasses at the table. 15 minutes later I realized what happened and went back to get them, and they were gone. Was it a loss or a theft? It was a loss. What happened with the laptop is no different, the minute they hit the "down" button on the elevator it became a loss.

I could have made a stink about it and gotten my next meal comped since I dine there often but instead, I chalked it up to a personal mistake and I bought a new pair of Maui's.

Last night the wife and I ate at a local mexican joint. After we were done, I requested and received a styrofoam box to put the leftovers in. Once the remaining chips, salsa, forks, and knives were persuaded into the container we paid the tab and left. Unfortunately I forgot to get the leftovers and so did the wife....



After countless calls, I gave up on retrieving them just a few minutes ago. I got the same run around as the OP..... stuff like "We dont have a security camera in the dining area" and my personal favorite "NO our boxes do not have tracking devices!"


And Visa hasn't been much better to deal with. The final rod through the block was the "difficulty of determining the actual charge back amount of the meal considering the fact that you used a buy one, get half off the next entree coupon"


Screw it... Im never eating at that place again

I have to admit that I'm pretty surprised at some of the responses here.

My wife once left her purse in a shopping cart in the parking lot of the store she'd just been in. Between getting the kids locked down and the packages stowed, she simply forgot about the purse. She was back in the parking lot 10 minutes later, and of course, it was gone.

We called the police to report it, simply to have record of the purse going missing in case we needed it later (and we did). We told the cop that we nearly didn't call because it was her mistake, and it was a 'loss'. His response? "Somebody took it. It wasn't theirs. When you take something that isn't yours, it's stealing."

And I TRULY don't understand the logic that if somebody is 'rich', the laptop was a loss, not stolen. Your financial situation has nothing to do with right and wrong.
