Lets get some feedback on the next event as well as suggestions on what we can do to improve. Location? Jackson Gulfcoast Hattiesburg North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain (Kelly's area of expertise) Was the run too long? Too short? Should we change the format to a Time Speed and Distance Rally or keep it simple? Overnight? How can we attract more participation? Charity Event? Show? Let me know what you think would work best I am open to all suggestions. Thanks again to everyone who came out both weekends. If we can coordinate this we could have at least 20 cars. As it turned out we had a total of 7 Ferrari and 2 Maserati.
Those who didn't make it should be kicking yourself. The weather was perfect and a nice mixture of country roads and interstate for the Rally. Its amazing how you can get a group of people together who have little in common other than the love for a work of art on wheels and have a pleasant day, great conversation and make new friends. There was lots of admiration of each others automobiles, rubbernecking by passersby and a job well done by our host, Gerard Hansen. This was well worth the full day, two tanks of gas and a sunburned left arm. Joe
Here are my thoughts. Location? Within a couple hours drive for participants. The coast could be a possibility if we stayed north a little. THe summer traffic south of I-10 is awful right now during the day. Perhaps a night drive on Hwy 90 could be done safely. Length? I would say shorten the course but make it more interesting with more country roads and less 4 lanes. Going through the small towns was fun. Lots of gawkers and horn blowing. I cracked up when two Ferraris and one Maserati ended up at the same chevron station in one small town at the same time. The locals were taken aback and asking "What kind of cars is them?" "I don't know but they aint no toyotas"! "What ch-all doing anyway"? Format? Time and Distance seemed to work for me although I didn't win. Overnight? That would give us more time for talking and tire kicking. I had a couple of conversations about if my GTB handled different with the 16" wheels vs the 14". Perhaps a chance to test drive each others cars. Charity Event? Im all for that and I think "Ford GT Joe" has something going with the Hattiesburg club pretty soon. Show? Been there, done that, so it really don't interest me that much. Just my 2cents. GTB Joe
Hey, I've got one of those too! I will be uploading my pictures shortly. GREAT event. I agree on the "less four lane, more backroad" format. Of course I am biased becasue with my short euro gearing I am turning darn near 4000 rpm in 5th gear at 70 mph. That coupled with a "free spirited" exhaust can make interstate driving a bit tiring in my particular Mondial. I do have to say I did enjoy the silver streak that apparently was a Ford GT flashing past on the four lanes on a few occasions. We decided he was running ahead, probably stopping for a sit-down meal or perhaps to take in a movie, then catching back up and blowing by us again! Just an INCREDIBLE car!
I agree on the four lane. It was just the quickest route to the O'Reilly stores. I was going to run the back roads but that would have pushed it to over four hours. Any suggestions for another date, October early November would be about time it starts getting a little cooler. That Ford GT is something special. There is another one in the Hattiesburg area that has lots of mods with twin turbos. You have to realize that the original GT 40 was only built to beat Ferrari at LeMans. They did a great job of re creating that car.
Thanks guys, I do enjoy the GT, but I really admire all of your cars. I grew up with posters of them on my wall. They are like works of art.
This 1966 Ford GT40P chassis #1045 was owned by Al Copeland ( Popeye's chicken). I refinished it and was on display during a auto body trade show in New Orleans in '90. I only got to drive it around the block once. Always one of my all tiime favorite cars and it was great to be able to work on it. It was a 289 cubic inch version with wire wheels. Alvin sold it at Scottsdale in "91 for $750.000 at that time it was the highest price car at the auction. I wonder where it is now. Image Unavailable, Please Login

Here's a couple of pics from sunday's rally. They are engines in the Ford GT and the Maserati. I'm assuming you can tell which is which? (grin) Something that I didn't know until last sunday is that the Maserati has all Ferrari running gear. Maserati just builds the body? Hummmmm? Both were awsome engines by the way!
