I thought it was absolute junk. As a matter of fact, walked out 1/4 into it; and I was a big fan to see it. The blue hues, annimation, and slow story line bored me.

I enjoyed the movie, but I don't believe it was as great as the $300M hype made it out to be. Looks like it could make a great video game though ...

The floating mountains have nothing to do with the gravity. They are floating because of the electromagnetic field emitting from beneath them. Thats why it only happens in that particular area. The mountains are filled with Unobtainum. I will give you that it was poorly explained in the movie.

I cant argue that the film didnt have some iffy plot elements. I dont call them holes because it isnt a matter of them not making sense as much as a little difficult to swllaow at times.

My biggest one is why the glass in all the ships/exo-suits is so easily shattered.

Having said that I challenge you to find a fantasy film that doesnt have these problems. From Star Wars to Lord Of The Rings, they all have these issues because the narrative has to be balanced with logic.

Personally I think the only people who feel it necessary to pick apart movies like Avatar, LOTR and Star Wars are those who have sadly left the child inside of them wither and die.

I just can't stand it when one person, is given all the credit for something a collective has done, but try explaining that George Lucas is not ILM or that Peter Jackson is not Weta. It has bothered me that James Cameron has been the only one given any credit on Avatar, especially when he couldn't have gotten these results from anyone but Weta Digital.

I agree with what you're saying but Cameron did write it and had the vision to make it. Without Cameron, there wouldn't be Avatar

(i do realize that it works vice-versa too)

Bows and arrows beat 22nd century technology everyday. Don't you guys get it? It's HOLLYWOOD. It's not supposed to make sense.

    It's supposed to make money.

No, I don't think so. This movie could have been a lot better. I wish it was.

Being in the film industry I see WETA getting a lot of credit. Maybe it doesnt come across that way to the general public but those that need to know , know.

The general public doesnt care about WETA or Legendary or any of the fx companies that slaved away. They want a figurehead , thats Cameron. Im fine with that.

There are so many things that could have been much better. I'm not going into details because it's just a series of spoilers. Let's just say I'm shocked Cameron didn't include a "mission accomplished" banner in the 3rd act. It's the only cliche' he left out. Maybe it will make it in the director's cut.

My objection to this movie is that it encourages more bad movies to be made that feature wiz-bang effects, tons of marketing and hype, and very little in the way of acting, storyline, character development, or intelligence. Maybe that's what people want now adays (at least the Xbox crowd) but I think the public deserves better.

Ok, I've said my peace. I will shut up now.

I saw Avatar on Christmas day, and was blown away. Spectacular! One of the best movies I have seen in a looooooooong time.

I didn't read all of the posts in this thread, so I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but I found that the story line reminded me a bit of "Dancing with Wolves".

Nice. Preemptively dismiss anyone who disagrees with you, and add in a disparaging description at the same time. I suppose there's really no need for any discussion at all.

FWIW, a world full of folks who haven't grown up isn't Neverland, it's Lord of the Flies.

I said 'pick apart' which is different than giving one's review . I have no problem with people who didnt like or enjoy the movie. But usually when someone picks apart something that is well loved it is because of their own internal issues.

Its very similar to the badge snobs who nit-pick certain cars.

You sort of proved my point with your last sentence.

I don't want to jump on the plot hole bandwagon but one issue that popped in my head during the movie was that the extremely strong magnetic field means relatively primitive bullets and rockets for the humans, but the human/avatar link always remained strong unless severed on purpose. The avatars also conveniently had a nice soft place to fall when the connection was lost.

Perhaps this is why they call it "suspension of disbelief".

I do wish the human characters were better developed, the Colonel just seemed like a war monger. Just 30 seconds of dialog between him and the boss is all it would have taken, that they would receive their bigger cuts if the unobtanium quarterly quota was exceeded. This would have went farther to explain how eager both were to destroy the Na'Vi home instead of exploring more of the planet for potentially even richer deposits that they didn't have to blow up a few square miles first.

Also no explanation how the company communicated with Earth over so many light years. I assume there is no cell phone service on Pandora.

I know the bossman had a piece, I thought the avatar would find a chunk after bonding with the navi's. Another loophole, how did the people board the helicopter and fly away easy, and the army guy had to use a mask after trying to shoot down the thing?

No, it hasn't. You're looking at the total take. What the studio will get is a mere fraction of that. And, Cameron probably gets his cut before they do.

For the studio to get back $300 million+ in production costs, the only chance they have is in DVD sales.

I think they are on track to make money on this film it is does not fizzle in 3 weeks. The key to Titannic was repeat business. Will this get the same?

I just got back from the film, excellent effects & cinematography, this just set a new standard movie making. Lots of eye candy but at mid point the plot almost put me to sleep.

I did. It was called Ghosts Of The Abyss, and it was Cameron's first 3D film.

... and Avatar 2 (and 3) have been part of the plan the entire time. I have no doubt that once Avatar reaches a predetermined earning point there will be an announcement.

Good point about "Ghosts of the Abyss".

Looking forward to the Avatar sequels.

Equally looking forward to Terminator 5 and hopefully 6. Another great "series" Cameron started.
