i understand that automated climate controls use the a/c compressor when set to cool the cabin in hot weather but what happens in winter? in all my cars, the auto setting also seems to turn the a/c on even during winter unless i also press the econ button. does this matter if i want to maximize fuel economy? thanks

what model are you referring to? on a 360, i know the a/c compressor needs to be on to get really good, hot heat. if you push the a/c button in the compressor does go off and will maximize fuel economy but the heat isn't as hot

It's Italian. This was driving me crazy when I first got my 360. It is counterintuitive.
    It is what it is.

I think most cars run the compressor when in auto climate control mode, to stop the compressor run it system in ECON mode, you will get heat and ambient air but no cool air.

Old or cars without auto climate typicaly have a button to turm the compressor off and on.

The A/C is used as part of the defrost/defogger (a dehumidifier uses the same technology) on most modern cars and is always on for some.

Everything that consumes power effects gas milage. This includes big loud stereos, high watage driving lights,...

The 575m, along with most all late model Fcars, use an electric water pump to circulate the water throught the heater core. If the climate control "On/Off" switch is Off, the compressor and the water pump are Off, hence you do not have heating or cooling. You can run the blower, though. I believe that the climate control logic is the same on all cars with the electric water pump, but I could be wrong. It should be noted, that on the 575m, the heat soak throught the firewall will keep you warm down to about 40F (not helpful in a Texas summer)!

Climate control is more than cool/heat but requires the a/c in winter to dry the air before warming it.

No Ferrari since the TR has used Italian climate control. Blame rests on the Germans and Americans.
