My guess is that they knew more teams were coming in '10 and they wanted a spot so they could sell it to the highest bidder. Don't be surprised if they sell in '11 for a profit.

How hard and fast is that rule?

Do you think USF1 got an exemption? Or "better to ask forgiveness than permission" type of thing? Wouldn't the gearbox be very closely engineered with the engine? Could USF1 just pick a new supplier arbitrarily without serious involvement of Cosworth? And why would Cosworth do it if it wasn't an approved gearbox? Maybe an exemption was already given?

 

I know you were joking, but the supercomputer was actually a bunch of Intel machines networked together.

Maybe they are simply using Emco for simply manufacturing one of the homologated designs of the other two companies, and not using an entirely new design. Can that be a possibility? I'm thinking along the lines of how the FIA wanted to standardize Cosworth engines, with the option of the current engine suppliers manufacturing the same standardized design in-house.

As far as USF1's wind tunnel work goes, my guess is that it is probably not as much for getting a baseline and measuring improvements, but more for verifying the accuracy of their CFD models and results. Also, I think the new teams are allowed extra wind tunnel time throughout the season.

Which is ironic because with the exception of Team Malay (aka Lotus) the new teams were trying to get in under the low budget rules. Wind tunnel time is expensive.

 

I was kidding. I'd love to see F1 run on a severely banked turn or even an oval.

If brought back to life with today's construction standards, sure why not.

The current Monza track is a desaster with all the castrating chicanes.

Yes, I'd also have loved to have seen just one race on the combined road/oval circuit a la the 1961 Italian Grand Prix.

 

I mounted it on my brand new book shelf wall in the middle of my living room. This is a very prominent spot where only my best stuff is on display (along with a MS signed helmet and an original Kevin Paige drawing of the Le Mans winning GT signed by Mika Salo).

BTW I bought Montreal tickets (section 15). I ended up giving up on silverstone. It really rubbed me the wrong way that they charge you over $600 per ticket but you don't get an assigned seat during qualifying. That is ridiculous! And since we were buying the best tickets available, they would have been the first seats snagged by the early birds... so my chances of showing up not-super-early and being able to get in my seat would be miniscule. Plus you don't even get a parking spot with 2 premium tickets.

We were going to do Germany but with all the BS around flying these days, we decided on just going to Montreal. I have relatives who live in the city I can stay with.

Should be a good race, I can't wait to see my man MS in action for the first time (live). A real dream come true!

Without trying to incense our British friends, I always thought that convenience wasn't invented in the UK, but the US. Silverstone has a huge racing tradition, but it is a major pain in the neck to visit that race for many reasons.

I remember once landing late at Heathrow because of traffic over the airport and hence loosing my connection to Switzerland, where I wanted to visit a unique Sauber exhibit. I was severly pissed because the loss of connection also meant no Sauber show at all (museum would close by the time I get there). I was swearing, yet the BA "helper" at the gate only lectured me for swearing public. I was about to murder that unsympathetic biatch.

Either of the German GP destinations offer great additional racing related attractions worth visiting and they're both logistically not that challenging. You should keep them on your list of GPs to go to.
