Looking at a Countach tomorrow

You're right Im inexperienced with these. I saw 2 so far, neither one could get out of the garage. the one in GA im going to see. No response from Roy on PM, Sackey tells me he has a DD then never writes back when i say im interested. So Im not having a lot of good luck with this. Its not me thats dicking around tho. I've done a ton of research and given the sellers every opportunity to sell me a car. It's not easy tho. 1 didnt run. 1 had no wheels and was priced 60K above market price, and these broker guys don't follow up. If the people on this board really don't want me asking questions here I wont. I aint buyin one sight unseen and when i dont even know if it runs, thats for sure. I aint buyin one for 60K over market price either.

whats the consensus? are the advisors on this board tired of my questions? If so I'll be glad to go it alone.

What's this forum for if not to answer to the best of our abilities, to someone that upfront says that they don't know everything, what to learn about and buy a CT.

It's not like you can walk into any dealer and say..."hey, I like that CT, let's go for a test drive"

Let's face it, the CT was made when Lambo was still sketchy with hard facts and details. To learn all the subtle differences between the year models, Euro, US, FI, carb....it's allot.

Here you have someone with enough passion to go and buy a CT with all the compromises that go with it. He could have just gone and bought a 360 or a 430 but wants a real exotic.

....why not help him in that endeavor?

I say stick around and ask your questions. Most on the forum are more than willing to help.

If you were looking for a Diablo ( the final word in exotic ), I could be more helpful.

I, myself have learned a few things about the CT from this thread....no, not just don't go see a car with the wheels off.

With Joe and Roy, both have good reps here and follow through. Sometimes, it takes time for a real person to respond.....not everyone is living through their blackberry.

Meanwhile, I am in the process of scheduling a private photo-shoot for images of all aspects of the car. I've realized this may take a few months. When I first came on this board I thought I could get this done in 2-3 weeks, but now I see this is more involved....but im still going through with it.

Just got my garage all cleaned out and checked for water leaks. Small progress I know, but progress is progress.

Just FYI, patience is a key word when looking for a good Countach. I followed one particular car for no less than 10 years before I had the chance to buy it. The owner of the car I speak of is not far from me, but travels frequently, and is not a motivated seller who is advertising the car. Its a private opportunity, and we shall see where this takes us.

 

nope, i have enjoyed the thread.

i wanted a Countach, but have decided, and stated i would rather have several cheap cars, than one expensive one. i dont think your questions are unwarranted at all. to me you come across as someone trying to do his due diligence, as opposed to those who are "impulse" buyers of " shiny and fast things ".

better to do the question asking before you buy one.

i will ( eventually) purchase a Diablo Roadster to fill my Lamborghini needs.

 

it is all a matter of what makes you more happy
2 or 3 affordable cars are sometimes more fun than one expensive machine

you tried one countach so you know what suites you better

as for the diablo roadster, i personally feel it has a lot of pros and they are great cars for the money today imo
there is not much choice for old genuine 200 mph open top supercar...and the VT roadster is a bargain versus the contenders

patience is the key word when looking for a countach

i know it first hand

there are not so many around, less in US and only a fraction is for sale at any given time...not to mention these few for sale may be not the variant you are looking for

just a small suggestion: be prepared to be quick when the right car comes up for sale...and do not be worried of spendind 5k or 10k$ more for a really nice one

the rightly priced good countach cars usually do not stay on the market for a long time...

Yes, I see. And the cars that are advertised may not even be available.

I made phone calls for 4 different cars today, and all 4 were already sold.

So let me say this right here on the forum..... if anyone reading here knows someone who's selling one, be sure to send me a PM with their info. I'm a serious buyer, and your friend will thank you for the referral.

Maybe another economic meltdown would be helpful.

 

I think the reason Joe has not written back to you is, the car I think you are talking about, I cannot verify that it is a true DD Countach. I have tried this two (2) different ways and cannot.
I am suppose to look at it tomorrow 9 Jan, but think I am going to pass. The owner is acting strange to say the least. He will not give me an address to see the car, and then says the only way I can see it, is if I show up with a cashiers check.
Also the car has side skirts, which never came on that year. So there are some questions about it, so I think I will just walk away.
I do not need the headache.

Im not sure which car you're talking about, but I would like to take this opportunity to educate myself.

How does one verify if it's a true DD?

And what else could it be, some kind if fake DD?

Have people taken US FI cars and converted them to DD? Is that possible? Hows does that work?

Seems to me you'd need a ton of hard to get engine parts, not to mention a new deck lid which would also be hard to come by. But I suppose anything is possible.

What goes on with a fake DD? Do they run ok? Are they the same thing in terms of driving, but just less valuable and collectable?

This is interesting. Should I be on the lookout for fake or converted cars?

BTW i tried contacting the lamborghini club of LA to see if that had anyone who wouldn't mind giving me some guidance, a test drive, or maybe even sell me one....but they were pretty much useless. Only 2 guys have them and they don't want to be contacted. Everyone's got a gallardo or murci. They sell test drives on the site for $99, which i would jump on, but it's in a gallardo.

Try contacting more people for a test-drive. With Southwest Airlines, it should not be too difficult to find somebody.

I allowed a young kid to drive my car. He came a long way to drive the car. It meant so much for him.

 

yes, when you drive your cars and dont rub them with a diaper. i dont mean this comment to you personally, but i am sorry, my opinion is there are way too many computer commandos on here .

by this i mean, buy a car. drive the car, fix things as they need to be fixed.

why some folks want a 198x whatever, and want it to be " perfect and brand new" is beyond me and a huge waste of time, money resources, and time. and time is money to me.

this comment is not directed at the OP , its just an observation that many folks on the Ferrari / Lambo boards, have unreal expectations for cars that were made in the 70s and 80s, and are only original one time.

they are all just used cars, Countach, 288 GTO, Camaro , i dont care.

i would rather be driving one of my 4-5 mediocre cars, while the other guys are waiting to buy that perfect car that never exists, or they have a car, and are paying some shop thousands of dollars to make sure it has all the little paint dots in the right spot.

someone else in another thread mentioned we are in a golden age right now. i believe them.

there is no way in hell we are going to have the ability to have and drive these older cars 10 years from now. there are too few resources, and all the old fart hippies are coming into power and want us all to drive "green" cars.

i just canceled two of my credit cards because the credit card companies decided i did not need to get paper statements anymore. i dont do all my stuff online, so i told them to F off, and closed the accounts.

i dont mind using resources in better ways, but some of this crap just floors me.

i am single, of means, and refuse to bow down to this green bullsheet being forced on me.

so i say we are burning daylight as gearheads, and some of you guys need to drive more, and live life, and quit worrying about so many of the little things.


i will continue to enjoy my fleet of mediocre, slow, old, smelly, loud cars.

when the sun comes up, i am taking the Slopenose out. i drove the Trans Am last night in 20 something degree weather. car loves the cold dense air.

I never drove a Countach before buying mine. Would never ask to.
IF I had a Countach that I was selling there would be NO test drives unless a deposit is in my hands. And I'm not talkin a thousand bucks either.
A serious buyer would show up with funds. Or wire them prior. If the buyer liked it enough to buy it he'll put the deposit in your hand for a test drive. If you're really not going to buy it, don't drive it.
Wire deposit or bring cash. If you buy it, wire the rest while you are there. This is if you have no broker to rely on.

 

Personally I don't have a big need to drive other people's cars and wouldn't pretend to be a buyer just for the opportunity.

That said, it is perfectly reasonable for a potential buyer to be permitted some experience with the car (at least as passenger) before they commit any funds to a stranger.

Peter, you might be a real "stand up guy" that has all his ducks lined up and would never lie or exaggerate a thing but there seems to be no shortage of charlatans selling cars out there. It makes good sense for buyers to approach cautiously.

It is beyond ridiculous to expect a cashiers check before showing the merchandise. Only a complete fool would buy something as complex and likely to need expensive work without "due diligence" and the initial look over and test drive/ride might be just part #1. If he's satisfied with the "easy part" I would certainly expect a detailed inspection by a competent expert. At this time some escrow arrangement might be necessary with a "purchase agreement" akin to that used with real estate.

Feel free to use the "cash on the barrelhead, take it or leave it" method when selling your cars but don't be surprised with the result.

 

+1, no test drive, no sale. I would never buy any car without a test drive and a full comprehensive inspection. I tell all my customers, if the seller wont let someone test drive it and perform an inspection RUN!!!

 

i think a seller seller SHOULD let a buyer see the car without putting a deposit on it
in my experience just by e mails and calls it is not so hard to find the real time wasters

i believe if a guy come to take a look at a car in person is:
- really interested in purchase
- a real passionate at very least

at this point, either way, i am more than willing to show him the car and take him for a ride in it (and i could even let some drive)
all without any deposit

p.s. i took a look at a good numbers of exotic cars for sale in last 5 years, i bought 1 every... 10-15 seen ....more or less, since i cannot buy ALL and some were not what i was looking for
