The one Grundy recommends is Intercity lines. They provide enclosed transport and are known for handing classic and high value cars without incident. I don't have any personal experience with them, though. Good luck! http://www.intercitylines.com/

I just had my Mondial shipped in an enclosed truck with Frank's Auto Transport. http://www.franksautotransport.com/ These guys came in lower than any bid I got at http://www.uship.com (it's like a reverse eBay for transport jobs)

Frank's got top notch guys; very easy to deal with. The driver had a great attention to detail and babied my car just as I would want!

When shopping for transporters, check out http://www.transportreviews.com/ for ratings and testimonials for your company of choice.

I used Intercity for My delivery from CA to S.E. IN. The driver was very professional, He called Me to update His progress and His rig was clean which shows pride in His work. They also were less expensive than the 4 others I called and applied an F-chat discount. This was done Thanksgiving day no-less.

Forget the transport!! Don't forgo the opportunity to DRIVE the car! You'll enjoy it and it will give you the best possible bond with your new 328. I drove mine from the previous owner's in Vegas to MD - 2700 miles - in 3 days and I enjoyed the heck out of it. The car ran like a swiss watch and I enjoyed the countryside, the questions and brief discussions at the gas stations, and the opportunity to take pics at cool places. Also got to really like Subway sandwiches! :)

It would be a shame to miss out on the chance to do this...but invest in a pair of foam earplugs - 12-14 hours a day can be a bit wearing on the ears.

I just had a car I purchased shipped from Texas to florida by Gran Tursimo Motorsports. I dealt with Steve there and they provided great service. The shipment was on time and I was updated by the driver and dispatch. They also seemed to take excellent care in handling the car. I would recommend.

    Highly recommend Intercity.

They are family owned, always available by phone, will never dodge you, are honest and are NOT a broker (they own/run their own trucks). My personal experiences with them have been great.

I used intercity once and it was a very pleasant experience. The co-driver called when they picked up the car and she called about 3 times when they got in town. Beware of shipping companies that use multiple transport companies. Your Ferrari will be loaded/unloaded by different truck drivers, stay in different lots and damages/negligency can occur.

I used Horseless Carriage from Paterson, NJ to move my 328 from Arkansas to NJ when I bought it last winter. They did a great job, reasonable price, fully enclosed trailer, and they know how to handle collector cars safely. Highly recommend them.

I have not used them, but I understand that Intercity is good also. I've seen them doing the collector car thing as well. I believe they do a discount for FCA members.

I would avoid some of these "internet" movers. They are basically brokers, and you have no idea who is actually going to be picking up your car or what kind of truck they will be using.

Stay away from brokers. I had one bring a Pantera up from Texas to NJ. By the time the car was delivered, a rim was broken, the radio was missing, and the clutch was completely smoked. I suspect they had fun pulling hole shots with the car. I initiated a suit, but that was a waste of time. Stick with the specialists. In this aspect, you get what you pay for.

I purchased Gary Res's (f-chatter) black/black 89 328 from Bentley of Long Island in December. (going from Long Island, NY to Indianapolis for $990) I used them on the dealership's recommendation and am very sorry I did. I was given 6 different pick up days only for me to call back after the "pick up day", each time and and get another pick up day. Since they picked it up last Thursday (finally) they gave me a 3-5 day window (which has come and gone). I, of course, called back again yesterday (Wed)and asked when I was going to get it and they said that it would be today (thur) and the driver would call back later that day (yesterday). Shockingly, I got no call yesterday. I called this morning at 8am and they said.... HMMMMM... I don't know why and they would call back within the hour. Again, I had to call back at 11am because they have NEVER called me, and they said they still didn't know why it was not being delivered today. They then said It looks like it will be Saturday, which doesn't work since I'm on vacation from tomorrow at 2:30 for a week. All of which I've told them earlier this week (which at the time seemed like a non-factor).

They are "supposed" to call back with more info....... and I'm still waiting....

I'll be shocked if the car doesn't have issues when it gets here (if it ever gets here)! I'll post when I get the darn thing.

The only thing that could make me happy at this point is if they show up with the car today and give me one hell of a discount. They have not lived up to ONE of their promises.

So to make a short story long... don't use Thomas Sunday, Inc!!!!

The whole concept of shipping a car when you could drive a car makes no sense to me unless the car is non-running in the first place. It seems from the postings here and on other sites that cars frequently have damage or other issues coming off the transporter that they didn't have going on.

IMHO, we need to get away from the notion that these cars are somehow too delicate to drive and have to be treated with kid gloves. One guy here posted that he would ship his Ferrari for any distance over 100 miles. I just don't get it; The only time I would ship mine is if I wanted it to end up in someplace that a road didn't go...like across an ocean.

I disagree. When I bought the 328 in Arkansas, it was in decent running condition. I flew down, took it for a good test drive, and was tempted to drive it home. I'm glad I didn't. Within a couple of hundred miles of getting the car, the bearings on the alternator went bad and threw the belt, taking the water pump belt with it. Had I been on the road driving back to NJ, I would have been cooked. I would never drive an old car 500 or 1000 miles or more until I had thoroughly gone through it and made sure everything was 100%.

As for transport companies, I'll say it again -- Horseless Carriage was great. It was about $200 more than the quotes I was getting from brokers for an enclosed trailer, but I knew these guys were pros. They showed up to pick the car up exactly when they said they would, and dropped it off exactly when they said they would, even called to let me know the car was in Jersey and would be delivered the next day.

This is not something to bargain shop for. The difference in price is well worth knowing you are dealing with someone who will get your car to you in one piece, undamaged, when its supposed to be there.

Thanks for all the input. I would love to drive the car home but it has not run in 9 years. "I had a different thread going about this car" Car only has 14K on it.Gonna need to do a major tune up and fuel & coolant lines when it gets here.

"Within a couple of hundred miles of getting the car, the bearings on the alternator went bad"

Well, I can't argue with whatever makes folks feel comfortable.

But re this example - bearings give a lot of obvious audible notice that they are going bad and take a good bit of time from the "initial notice" to failure. They don't go from being fine to seizing in a few hundred miles. The bearings were obviously bad at the time and it seems to me the mechanic doing the inspection...didn't. ;)

I agree with you in the sense that if you are not totally confident about the car then transport makes sense. Certainly if the car has not been exercised regularly I wouldn't try to drive it unless I had the time to sort it out first. So in the case of the car in question - not driven for years (I didn't realize that) I would transport it as well.

When I bought my 328 in Vegas I was prepared for the possibility of transporting it though that was not my plan. After the PPI/sale I drove the car in the 108 degree heat in Vegas for two days and then personally rechecked a bunch of stuff. Everything was great so I headed to MD. Of course this was a 328 that was driven regularly and serviced regularly.

I used Horseless Carriage to get our 308 from New Jersey to St. Louis. They were the least expensive of the 3 companies I talked with. I was able to call the company office for updates then they gave me the driver's cell phone number. I was very satisfied with them and would definitely use them again.

I believe that Horseless Carriage is the official carrier for FNA.

The real test of a shipping company is how they respond when things go wrong. Will they make it right? Do they face up to it?

I heard good things about Passport on that score, so I used them to move my Alfa, about five years ago.
Didn't have a chance to see what would happen if things didn't go right, because it went better than I expected.
(A Spica Alfa that had been sitting for six months, and the driver managed to start it. I was expecting to pay the extra $100 "non running car" surcharge.)

I agree with Steve...when you have just bought a car that has unknown reliability, driving it across the country to get it home is risky--unless getting stranded would be a fun adventure for you. If the seller "guarantees" the car and will pay for any breakdowns, I would be tempted to drive it...but good luck with that.

I was very satisfied with Intercity Lines myself.

Pilot, Reliable, Horseless Carriage, and Intercity are all reputable. Call each one and ask for a quote. Let them know you are quadruple bidding it. Business is slow these days.
