    I'm still not sure what those things that look like wide shower heads are. Are they the pre-oil filters that were referred to?

    :) Thanks Glenn, what does a pre-oil filter actually do? Is it for preventing large fragments damaging the filters themselves? :confused:

    I believe that they are for stoping larger than normal debris to be sucked by the oil pump itself, damaging it..

    They are normally called filter screens. :):)

    Ricardo is correct. They are there to catch any large debris before it gets sucked into the oil pump. :):)

    Just thought i would share some info on the tool i used for shimming the valve clearances.

    I have read about the tool but never seen it in use; i purchased it from T. Rutlands. As you can see in the photos you get 2 parts, i called them spoon and hook, they are both made out of brass.

    You push the spoon tool between the cam and the shim; there is notch in the shaft that sits on the head. Then install the hook around the bottom of the cam to keep the bucket pressed down, now remove the spoon and the valve should stop open. Blow some compress air into the slot on the bucket and the shim will “pop” out.

    One thing that came apparent was the brass “hook” was not going to last very long as the pressure from the valve spring was wearing the edge where is sits on the bucket, so a cut one out of some mild steel which has a much better feel to it and so far has not taken the edge off it.

    I had seen various threads on valve shimming and kept reading about the shims measuring a different thickness to what was stamped on them (I am talking new shims) go to say i took this with a pinch of salt how wrong was i !!! I ordered what i needed and most of them were out. Lucky with a bit of moving around i got 13 out of the 16 where i wanted them, but i had 3 shims that needed to be 3.70mm and they were 3.65 to 3.68mm.

    I rang up the supplier and asked if they could go and measure there 3.70mm shims for me, but the main man was on holiday so I said sod it send me 10 of them, got them today and out of the 10 3 were the right size!

    Just a few more photos from today’s work.

    Finished building up the LH cylinder head, was time to reunite it with the block.

    New gasket, nuts, studs and torque up to 60nmn then turned though 90 deg.

    Fitted the freshly coated exhaust manifold again with brand new studs and nuts.

    Going to start to build up the RH cylinder head now, so expect to fit that next weekend.
    The last photo is to show the finished repair to the engine cradle.

    That is Fantastic!!! Where did you get the exhaust manifold? I've never seen an aftermarket one for a 348. Sure is pretty compared to the one piece stock unit.

    The manifold is the stock Ferrari one with the "tin" covers removed. I had it coated to keep the heat down.
