I have traveled to San Diego several times on business but always stayed in Rancho Santa Fe. My family has decided we should make a group visit in July for fun. My question is where should we stay? Our two children are 30 somethings, we like the beach, and my wife goes for a spa. Suggestions can be in city or surrounding area like La Jolla.

    Thanks.

+1 on La Costa but I'm biased (have a membership there).

Hotel Del is nice and the beach is probably nicer in some ways (finer, whiter sand) but to me the place is a bit overrated and *very* touristy.

You could also consider the Four Seasons Aviara in Carlsbad.

Four Season's @ Aviara in Carlsbad is the only 5 star in San Diego County. La Costa is only 3 miles from Aviara, but it's a step down (if ya know what I mean!)

It looks like Oceanside is starting to want some of the "TOT" for their own coffers. There might be a nice place to stay there now. (It'll never feel as safe as Carlsbad does, but it is getting better.)
