I need to replace the stereo/CD unit in my 1993 Mondial T, and I need recommendations on a good unit that "looks right" (no tuner car flash) but is also readily available in stores or online. I have been told Alpine is a good brand; any suggestions as to model and/or other manufacturers would be welcome. Thanks.

We put a basic Alpine unit in our t. Only 4 neon blue buttons and I like the mp3 disc feature. All the songs I need on one CD. (Which is good because there is no place to store a CD case in the car)

Sounds great with the factory (I assume original) speakers.

I installed a Kenwood KDC-X859 in my 308QV about 8 years ago. I'm sure this model has been updated a few times since I bought it. Anyway the point is, I liked this head unit at the time as when you power down the unit, the face plate turns around all you see is a black plate, which on the 308 with a black dash, just blends in - no bling.

If you want a photo let me know and i"ll post one.

I'm sure there are many brands that do the same nowadays.

Investigating the same thing for my 328. One of the issues is that to get something that works better you really need more power than you can get out of a head unit on its own & that means an external amp.

That's not easy in a 308/328 (maybe easier in the Mondi) because of the size of the thing and where to put it ( no room under the seats in a 328).

Anyway, the point of this is I recently came across this thing which looks like its going to solve the problem:

    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7-10141821-48.html

Its a lot smaller than any other external amp I've come across & delivers 4x45W RMS (not peak, RMS).

Works with any post-2005 Alpine head unit apparently.

OK...... I'll give you an alternative option pending your budget. It's expensive but I love it.

The previous owner of my 328 fitted a brand new Becker head unit as per OEM fitted to 360's. He also wired up an Ipod connector which is located in the center console.

I love this head unit for a couple of reasons, firstly it's an exceptionally good unit and secondly because it looks spot on in the car. The Ferrari logo really sets it off and makes it also look OEM eliminating all the disco lights of current units.

Here's one for sale now on Ebay - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ferrari-360-Original-Becker-Car-Stereo-Casette-168855_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem4140656b49QQitemZ280253262665QQptZCarQ5fAudioQ5fVideo

A new Sony CD/radio was installed by Ferrari of Long Island dealership before I purchased my car. Wrong choice as it is all Al face & sticks out esp w/ my blk interior. I'm putting it in my Miata & black face something in the F. Personally I like Kenwood but may go w/ something more PC. Great electronics are a dime a doz & come down to preference IMO.

That unit DOES NOT fit in a 308, perhaps a 328, but NOT a 308. You have to do some surgery to your dash to make it work. It is about 2mm+ too big in height and in width. Have no idea about depth.

    Buyer beware.

OK...... I'm surprised to read that.

My objective was not to mislead. I didn't think that there would be any difference between 308 and 328 stereo holes.

Most of these units were all the same size but if you are sure it won't fit then obviously it's not the unit for the job.

Bob, I have a cassette and cd version of this unit (origionally from a 360 or newer as I recall). Neither fit in MY 308. Talk about a VERY unhappy camper.

My 308 is a 1981 GTSi North American version.

It would fit but I would have to remove the metal bracket and perhaps even slice some fibergalss outta the hole to make it fit.

PLEASE DON'T take just my word for it. PLEASE ASK around further. Someone MAY have had better luck or figured out "a fix."

I have NO idea about a 328. None whatsoever. But I too would think the holes would be the same, but who knows.

Just to finish off the thread, I got a very basic (minimal annoying lights and "bling") Alpine CDE-102 unit. It works fine, has a nice option of using a USB thumb drive for music; I put 60+ CDs on an 8GB drive...saves a lot of space in the car.

Do they have an amp in the radio? Are there RCA's to add amps and do they have aux-in?

I am no stereo expert, but here goes:

not huge output, with only 18 watts RMS x 4

there are 4 RCA output jacks on the unit to connect to amplifiers

there is an aux input on the front and the unit is compatible with the various IPods and IPhones, but not the Zune

As mentioned, it also hasd the USB port for thumb drive

all in all for $149 it was a pretty good deal.

I am going to replace the radio in my '87 Mondial. None of the nearby shops have done this on any Ferrari. Since they seemed pretty uneasy about doing it, I am unwilling to let them learn on my car. Would someone tell me the procedure for removing the radio?

My 308 never had a radio. I was going to install one years back but couldn't seem to find one that fit without cutting. I don't want an old radio but I don't like the looks of the new styles in an old car. Still don't have one. Gave up. I listen to the engine instead.

I just replaced my stereo and got a newer model with the USB, MP3 and Bluetooth. Its hard to find a good single din that has the look and the accessories. The one thing about installation that was made clear to me by a friend was that you have to make sure that the ground never fails on the radio because the antenna cable will then act as the ground (which is right below the vinyl on the dash, i.e. burn through the dash) and can fry the cable because the antenna has its own power source and ground. Now I did not see this but he did a lot of car stereos and is now doing home installations (not because of the problem he had with the Ferrari).
FWIW, I doubled my ground on the stereo (two different places). How this happens, I don't know but the antenna has its own switch on the console and maybe this has something to do with it after looking at the wiring diagram.
Good luck with your new tunes. nd this was on an 80 308, not a Mondial.
