Now this pisses me off to no end. Are there any organizations to fight against this or do we just call our reps? Are we going the way of England? No more fun? Isn't this CA, the birthplace of car culture? You need money? Fine, I'd rather just pay an extra $100 or whatever in lic. renewal and keep my insurance from also going up.

Governor wants to catch speeders with red-light cameras to help balance budget
    L.A. Times January 8, 2010 | 2:11 pm

California drivers could get stuck with speeding tickets even with nary a cop in sight under a proposal tucked deep in the budget Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger unveiled today.

The Republican governor wants to let cities and counties install speed sensors in red-light cameras to ticket speeding drivers. Those whizzing by the detectors up to 15 mph above the limit would have to fork over $225 per violation. Those going faster than that would pay $325 under the plan.

Red-light cameras already exist in communities across the Southland, from Beverly Hills to Yucaipa. The governor wants to install speed detectors in 500 of those cameras, which would nab an estimated 2.4 million speeding violators per year, according to the finance department estimates.

That would net cash-strapped California about $337.9 million through June 2011. Every year after that, the program would generate nearly half a billion dollars, the finance department says. Local governments would get a cut of the proceeds.

Arnold needs to get his big fat *** out of office, we got rid of that other useless Governor we had, we need to get this fat *** out of office now. He is useless just like our photo-op Mayor here in Los Angeles. Kalifornia is screwed, but its a perfect example of how socialism DOES NOT WORK. Were Bankrupt, the rest of the USA should use us as an example.

CA is the guinea pig for a lot of tax schemes the Feds try to float on people. Just as the UK is for the US etc. If it's any consolation many of the GPS units over there like TomTom etc. show you exactly where the cameras are so you know where to slow down.

An attempt to introduce UK-style fixed speed cameras in America has ended in a public revolt, with motorists binning speeding tickets worth $90 million

Many Americans regard the speed cameras as an unconstitutional tax collection method and have flatly refused to pay the fines Photo: PA

The Arizona scheme, which was the first statewide effort to bring speed camera enforcement to the US, is now on the verge of bankruptcy and could be dumped.

I hate the random vans I see, as well as the cameras, but now that I've driven a few of the roads, you know where the cameras are, you can also tell because everyone slows down to the limit or a few above. What I hate even more, are the people that get so enraged (not anyone in this thread, don't take it the wrong way ), such as the man, who had shot and killed a man setting up a van that takes photos, so sad to hear about that.

I have no experience with speed cameras. Would a radar detector, like my Valentine 1, detect the presence of a speed camer?

Some Radar detectors with GPS already identifie cameras, so the speed traps would be easy as well...looks like ill have to pick one up as my old V-1 does not...

Speed cameras have to use either radar or laser to establish what speed you are going (just like the police), so they should be detectable to the same extent.

I haven't lived in AZ for 10 years, but back in the day I found that the cameras they were using tended to have older types of radar guns attached, and so my V1 picked the cameras up better than it detected police with instant-on laser. But they may well have upgraded since then.

I will note that I really, really hate photo radar guns, and I think red light cameras actually make intersections more dangerous, so I hope this doesn't actually come to pass.

Why can't we just get the speed limits raised to something more reasonable? We have surface streets here in San Diego County with posted 50 mph limits where most people barely go over 40-45. I realize this isn't as convenient as setting the limit to 25 mph so that every mom in a minivan is 10 mph over the limit...

As far as the Governator goes, I guess this is how you try to balance the budget without raising regular taxes.

Nope, use what Daniels used: A penis mask. Judge told him that although they couldn't ID him, and they had to let him go, next time he saw him, he was going to jail. LOL
