Stefan GP sends equipment to Bahrain

Stefan Grand Prix has shown it remains determined to race in Formula 1 this season, despite having no entry, after sending equipment to the first race in Bahrain.

The Serbian team has made no secret of its intention to join the F1 grid in 2010, having reached provisional agreement with the former Toyota team for technical support - which is believed to include the right to use the Japanese manufacturer's original 2010 car and engine.

And although the team's hopes of getting a late entry rests on one of the current new teams failing to make it, Stefan GP is not holding back in making sure it is ready just in case.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the team said that it had dispatched items to Bahrain – even though all the new teams remain adamant that they will be on the grid for the season opener.

"Stefan Grand Prix...becomes the first team in F1 history who did send a 40 foot container full of equipment to the race in Bahrain without having entry for 2010 season," said a statement issued by the team.

Stefan GP has said previously that if it does not get an entry, it still plans to test throughout 2010 prior to making a push for a grid slot in 2011.

Campos is the first to fail. They haven't paid Dallara anything; Dallara has stopped any work for them, plus their deal with meta fell through....

You never know in F1 but it sounds like they're confident that space will become available soon.

I don't understand why you should have to wait for a slot to appear. Why can't they just bring back pre-qualifying at the races? The FIA decide how many cars are allowed to race and those that are quick enough are allowed to race. So if they decide to cap it at 24 cars per race and 30 cars turn up the slowest 6 go home.

F-1 would never do this, because it makes too much sense.

They don't do it because there's a lot of power to be had when one has the right to grant (and deny) an F1 franchise.

Probably Bernie has already granted them an entry. Unofficially, of course.

I suspect you are correct which is why last week they also loosely confirmed their relationship to Toyota

"Stefan GP has just come to a basic agreement with Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) that Stefan GP will receive technical supports from TMG.

Further details will be released to the press in due course."

I don't think they can, due to the ways the TV money is earned by, handed out to, the teams.

Wow that's too bad. I had high hopes for Dallara. Someone should try to pick up the pieces because from an engineering and construction point of view, these guys could do it.

    BINGO!!!!!!

In the late 80s they had pre-qualifying to weed out the really slow ones.

For example at Brazil in 89 they had 39 entries. They held a pre-qualifying session between 8am and 9am on the first day of qualifying to thin the ranks. Basically that meant that 13 cars competed for just 4 positions in official qualifying. With a 26 car grid it meant that the top 11 teams from the previous year were exempt from pre-qualifying up until the season mid-point. At mid-season the top 11 teams were exempt from pre-qualifying.

I see no reason why the same cannot be applied to this season and beyond. No reason we can't have the top 8 teams exempt from pre-qualifying and then recalculate mid-season.

It is a wonderful way to weed out the week.

Did someone say Zakspeed? (the car couldn't last the length of a driveway...)

It has been done before and should be done again to weed out the pretenders.

    Frank

I remember when qualifing meant you really did have to qualify within a percentage of pole or it was see ya.

Now no one is going to spend the money to join F1 to not be allowed to race. It's about money, which means sponsorship and they are not going to piss away millions to not have product seen. F1 is all about money. See ya in Canada.

I applaud Stefan GP and hope that one of the imposter teams will fail and his cars will be on the grid at Bahrain!

How does this jibe with the supposed three race absence teams are to be allowed?
Either that rumor is false or a team is expected to throw in the towel before exercising that option. Either way Stefan seems confident that there will be a grid slot available.

My feeling is, that USF1 will "only" be late, but eventually show up. Campos however seems dead in the water.
