    Hi,

I´m new to the forum. I´m in the search of my dreamed 355 gts. I´ve seen a few for the moment and none of them are in good shape. Well, actually there is one but it´s a bit strange.

It`s a 355 gts registered in january 1996. Heres what I have come up to: if it was registered in january 1996 it should have been fabricated in 1995 and should have the 2.7 system, which it does, But the strange thing is that it has airbag! did the late 1995s have airbag¿?¿?

I´m a bit confused now Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

Mine is an early 95 and has an airbag.

I think all US spec'ed models had airbags...Euros did not (at least at first).

The car is euro spec and was sold in France for the first time. The thing is, If someone can confirm that late 95s had airbag, I will definately buy it, but If they didn´t that means that the engine comes from another car, or at least the injection system.

I just managed to talk to a very kind Ferrari dealer and he has confirmed to me that the 2.7 injection engine came with and without airbags. So that means that in a few days I´ll be the owner of a 355 gts.YEAh!

If someone is wondering why I didn´t call Ferrari in first place.... I did, and I only got "go and ask the owner" and " for any info related to that car youll have to bring it and we will tell you" answers.

I think that often the "model year" designation does not correspond with production time. I had a 1999 that was called a '99 by Ferrari but was built and delivered in 1998. My current '98 (Ferrari designation) was built in 1997.

So if it was registered in 1996 I am betting it is a '96 model through and through. Which means OBD2 and Motronic 5.2 with airbags.

ooops I think I may have used the wrong words and explained myself wrong. Sorry I´m Spaniard and it`s been years since i didn´t practice my english.

When I say registered I mean that it was "license plated" (if that makes any sense) Sold to the owner may be a better word. So as far as I know if it was sold to the owner in january 1996 that means that it was built in 95 or before, or that the owner payed for it in january, ferrari built it in less than a month and delivered it to him.

does it make any sense what I´m saying?

once again sorry for my english

I think I understand you completely. What I am saying is that Ferrari was building cars that they considered 1996 models in 1995 and calling them '96s and they were built to 1996 model year standards. Even if the car was completed and delivered in 1995. Don't look at the build date to interpret the model year. Just as we bought a 2009 Honda in November of 2008. But it is a model year '09 and has '09 options.

The model year is in the VIN, but I am not sure how to decode that. Someone here will...

My first thought is that you are looking at a 1996 in every way.

10 character of VIN indicates year on US spec(A) cars only.... Euro(B), UK(C), Australia(D) do not....

US cars - 10th character---this applies to all car makers in the world if they produced a US spec car...
    1995 - S
    1996 - T
    1997 - V
    1998 - W
    1999 - X

Whats the VIN and I will tell you exactly what yr it is....

These days I´m quite busy but i will post pics when i have it for sure ;)

I´ll pick it up around the 15-16th of this month that is the only two days I won`t have to work.

The car will go straight to my home to wait till´the shop tells me i can take it there to make a complete service. That way I´ll have peace of mind for the next 3 years that critical parts have been changed. It also needs some interior detailing, but apart from that the car just what I was looking for. Manual gearbox and just has 27K miles.

By the way, what gear oil does ferrari recommend for the 355??

I believe its a 75W- 90, but what api? GL-4 or GL5?? and how many litres or quarts do I need?

If you are interested, I have a non airbag 95 euro 355 steering wheel. They are very rare.

Pm me if you would like a price.

Oh, and by the way, post some pictures of your GTS!!! :D

Don´t you happen to know the api maybe? lots of people dont take care about it but its ultra important if you put the one that is not recommended you can be prepared to change all synchronizers...

Thats the one i was going to use. I´ve got like 8 quarts of redline mt-90 api GL-4 at home. The issue is that if api GL-4 is recommended for your tranny you should only use that api cause if you use a GL-5 for example, you will destroy your synchros. And you know, if the car was a ford focus, well, you can find used trannys everywhere or just buy a new one, but ferrari´s prices are not ford`s...

Thats why i want to be completely sure about what the recommended api is
