I cannot lock my front bonnet...the drivers side bonnet lock will not engage. any idea how i can adjust or fix the lock?
Check the easy stuff first: #1: there is a black "emergency" pull cable under the dash on the side that is not locking. *PUSH* the black handle upward and into the black cable shield as far as it will go. If it is out too far, the lock won't latch. #2: look at the latch itself. Is there debris in that area? Is a cable going to it obviously stuck or broken?
ND's first suggestion is the first thing I would check. My second suggestion would be that the rubber seal around the edge of the trunk opening isn't pushed all the way down onto the metal lip, somewhere in the area of the latch that isn't catching.
I had that problem, but my mechanic showed me to close the lid by pressing pretty hard in the middle of the lid from the fully open position to get some good speed on it while shutting and it latched that way every time. It made me nervous because I thought I would break something. The latch may also need adjustment so that it catches. BT
Thank for the advise...I will try to fix... what about the spring action on the lock itself. Should I try to adjust?
There is no reason why your trunk latch should go out of adjustment, unless the bolts are loose, which doesn't seem likely. Personally, I would cringe at BT's mechanic's suggestion to push harder. Shouldn't be necessary. Mine ordinarily latches fine if I drop the lid from about 18" up. My right side one sometimes doesn't latch from that height, so I just put my palm against that corner of the lid to spread the contact, and give it a slight push down. Works every time.
As a general rule, always exercise great caution making any changes/adjustments to remote-operated lids. If you get it jammed shut it might be a real pain to open. Don't trust the back-up cables that some cars have, they are connected to the same latch. I would recommend trying the analytical approach as has already been mentioned before. It is likely that the latch didn't reset or the rubber is in the way. If you need to adjust the latch a bit, the U-shaped part in each bonnet corner (part #4) is simple. Try lengthening it just a little. If you go too far the panel won't lie flush with the fender when closed. Image Unavailable, Please Login
