Because I disagree with you I'm whining? WTF?

As I've already said, we're going to agree to disagree. I tried to use logic - Only American teams play, making it, logically, nothing more than a national championship - A good one, yes, but it's not a world championship. Period.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Agreed. Absolutely no argument from me there. They are the Superbowl champions. They are the national champions.

They are not world champions - You have to play other nations to claim that honor. Period.

They would if there were any! The best players in the world sign with our teams.

If Michael Phelps was the only person to enter the swimming races in the Olympics, he would still win the gold medal. It wouldn't be his fault that other countries didn't enter.

Indeed. Many nations are represented in the NFL. Doesn't change the fact that it's a national championship. The English Premier League features players from many nations, and is generally considered the best league on the planet, but winning it does not make you a world champion - Or even European champion - There's another tournament (with entries from around Europe!) to decide that title.

Ahh but they do - That's what makes Olympic (and soccer WC) sports true finders of world champions. If no other nation entered, it would not be an Olympic sport. Just because no one else plays and therefore claiming to be WC's is, as previously noted, arrogant and somewhat ignorant IMHO.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Why does every American Football thread have to turn into "real football is played with the feet na na na"?

Sure, soccer is more popular. It requires no equipment. All it takes to play is a severed human head for a ball and some marks in the dirt.

Just because 89% of the world is too poor to field a NFL-style team doesn't change the performance of the champions.

Err, with all due respect, that's not the debate at all.

Indeed - The Saints are the champions of the NFL. They are the best American Football team in the world right now. But that does not make them WC's - Nobody else even plays!

I'll try an analogy (FWIW) - Me and some buddies ("the owners") recently started a new league - Our sport is "doohickey-nerfing" and it requires physical skill and mental acuity. We just finished our inaugural season, and my team won the playoffs - I'm a world champion!..... I reckon you'd (justifiably) LOL at my claim......

Seriously, this is the way the NFL is viewed outside of the USA - Claiming to be "world champions" does nothing for the image of the sport. In fact, it makes the American chest thumper a laughing stock: "WC's! WTF? You've got to be in the States to even play the game!".

    +1 :)

    Cheers,
    Ian

You are simply wrong. Hate to say it. There are leagues outside of the U.S and multiple inside the U.S.. The undebatable fact is that the NFL is the premier league in the world with other leagues fully in existence. Not only that, but players from S. Africa, Europe, and even Haiti play in all of those leagues.

Not sure why you would come into a thread like this and make a stink but all I hear here is misdirected envy, which is very weird if you ask me. I hope I am wrong about this last observation!

We would only laugh if your sport excluded internationals from playing, had no other competetive leagues playing INTERNATIONALLY, and had not been formed as 90 years ago.

OK, I'll concede there are a few "leagues" that continue to play American Football.

Part time, for beer money. A buddy of mine even played (and got paid) American football in Sweden a few years back. But, as you rightly said, these guys aren't going to compete with the NFL.

The NFL owners dumped a shed-load of money into "NFL Europe", and that failed miserably after a few years. The WWF dude tried with the "XFL" - because "we" wanted more football - Failed. The AFL tried with a 50 yard game - Failed.

    Which reminds me:

    NFL: National Football League
    IOC: International Olympic Committee
    ICC: International Cricket Council
    FIFA: Federation International Football Association
NASCAR: National association of taxicab racers

Nothing wrong with that. The Saints are undeniably the best National Football team out there right now - Cool. But to claim to be world champions is, IMHO, complete BS.

No doubt. But that DOES NOT A WC make - Someone else (outside of the USA) has to give a **** before you can claim to be the WC. [IMHO]

Don't get me wrong, I've grown to love the National Football League. It's a great and entertaining product - Very, very cool and includes the best players from around the globe. But it just isn't a "world championship". [Please see the Olympics, soccer WC, and, eg, the swimming worlds for that.]

The NFL offers a wonderfully entertaining experience (on TV), but to claim the winners are world champs is BS.... Best in the world - No doubt. But the two are different.

Oh, this isn't (IMHO) "pointless stuff" - Sport is important, and this is a fun debate. ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

No, no, no - Our league has owners in the UK and Spain. Players come from all over the globe. We're new, and inexperienced in sports marketing, but we're getting there.....

I'll bite on the "modern era" (45 superbowls?). But you cannot, surely, claim those 45 years represent an international experience?

There are no (non, zero) competitive American Football teams outside of the USA - Which is fine, it's a great product, but they're not WC's IMHO..... You have to beat other nations, equally equipped clubs etc in order to be a WC.

Are we having fun yet? ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

You are so dead wrong on this it's COMICAL.

But you say a football 'world champion' in the USA is not a true 'world champion' ?

Yes, they are, unless someone else ante's up and wants to play them, and that ain't gonna happen anytime soon. You see, it CAN'T happen because every Tom, Dick and Ian will try to form a team and challenge them, and that can't happen. Won't happen.

YOU are fully entitled to claim for yourself the title of 'world champion' of anything, go ahead, it doesn't bother me at all.

Anyone can be a WC at anything until someone else with a bonifide threat to unseat them comes along, but until then.... not.

As I said, you can claim to be the world champion at doohickey-nerfing and it would not bother us at all - GO FOR IT.
I happen to be the world champion at ping-pong baseball..

I am asking Rob if he can publish it. I know, as was pointed out, my track record of picking games suxx, but I am one of the few that had NO +9. I got LUCKY, and I will admit it, but luck counts.

You are doing GREAT at proving my claim that F1 cannot have a 'WORLD Driving Champion', keep it up.

'You have to beat other nations, equally equipped clubs etc in order to be a WC.'
Yeah, that's my point, so where do you draw the line?
Almost all teams in F1 are in England, and not all of them are equally equipped..

"Saints quarterback Drew Brees stopped by the New Orleans location of Lucy's Retired Surfers Restaurant after Tuesday night's Super Bowl victory parade and taught the crowd the pre-game chant he's been doing all season. Before the Super Bowl, he told reporters he learned the chant from a group of Marines he met during a USO tour last year, but tweaked the words to make it applicable for the team. "If you are a member of our team, you know the chant. But for everybody else, y'all can keep wondering what we're saying," Brees told the Buffalo News. Given the packed house at Lucy's, everyone with Internet access now knows the words. To see the video, click here."

It's a domestic competition, PERIOD. Deal with it.

Thanks for your arrogance, ignorance and pathetic regional stereotyping.

Anyway, you fail to see or comment on other people's comments that differ from yours so there is no point in debating with someone who has no skills to do so.

I'm happy, in real Football (you know the game that was called football way before American Football was invented and a game that you use your, erm, feet and a ball), i saw my team beat Chelsea last night.

    Happy Days

I am arrogant. Very much (especially being an SEC football fan - the most elite of all real football)

now go kick some ass on the cricket field (or whatever it's called) and stop the worry with a man's sport like ours.

I don't need to be told how arrogant you are. You seem to think it's something to be proud of?

Ignorance is also one of your strengths Not my fav game in thew world but i dare you to actually play Cricket and face a few overs from a quick bowler. You'll end up with more than skid marks in your pants.

Indeed. These zealots aren't going to concede that you need to play internationally in order to be considered a WC. "We're the best, therefore we're the WC's" is, IMHO arrogant, ignorant and devalues the sport. [I love the NATIONAL football league btw, but the Saints aren't WC's.]

We're just going to have to beg to differ. Which is fine. No need for name calling.

    Cheers,

come on guys, neither side is going to win this argument. Americans are mostly ignorant to the international popularity and skill of sports like football, cricket, and F1. Europeans are maybe ignorant to how big American Football is in the states from pee wee leagues, high schools, college, and then the pros.

I'm not going to get in battle if the Saints are the "World Champions", but they are definitely the best American Football team in the World right now.
