    Jim, do you have details of what Ferrary actually did when they rebuilt 0856 using a considerable part of the 0846 frame. From what I can tell they fooled everyone for quite some time. You may have discussed this at some time in a previous thread but a brief summary would be nice. thanks tongascrew

    They didn't rebuild 0856 using any of 0846. They simply painted 0846's Daytona livery on 0856 which they had cut into a Spyder for Brands Hatch and told David Clarke and other's that 0856 was the Daytona Winner which of course it wasn't. 0846 was the Daytona winner and a considerable part of it's original frame and other parts as delineated in the 0846 thread are what Marcel has called The Resurrected (Brought back from the Dead) 0846 as she exists today.

    0856 is a P 4 and has a P 4 chassis.
    0846 is a P 3/4 and has a P3 chassis modified to fit a P 4 engine, suspension and wheelbase.

    The chassis are not the same.

    What was the reason for doing this? Did they have different coloured transaxles denoting different gear- or diff ratio's? Or, assuming that the casings are magnesium castings, were they deemed too exposed and armed against corrosion this way?

    Simply to stop corrosion. The insides are painted as well as the castings are porous and leak if they aren't.

    If the wheels weren't painted they'd leak as well.

    These photos were taken during the 2nd Annual Competition Car Show held from 25 February to 5 March 1967 at the legendary Carlo Biscaretti di Ruffia Museum in Torino, Italy. See also page 11 of the Italian magazine "Auto Italiana", issue #10, Anno 48 of 9 March 1967. 0846 had just returned from Daytona.

    I'd never seen this picture before, has it appeared in this thread? This is 0846 on the side of the Mulsanne straight after its retirement in 1967. The photo credit goes to David Phipps. It appeared in the Autoweek report of the Le Mans race in the issue of July 1, 1967.

    It looks like the right (driver's side) door is leaning against the side. The nose is up in the air because the right rear tire is flat. Amon said he bailed out of the burning car while it was still rolling - lucky it didn't roll back onto the track! You can see the warning triangles that have been set up to warn oncoming drivers. Looks like a place that not many photographers were present, the cars probably went by in the blink of an eye at that speed.

    I picked up several boxes of old Autoweeks (Competition Press) today, all the way back to 1961. There's a lot of great stuff in these, but Oh Lordy, do they smell bad! I imagine that paper was almost white 40 years ago.
