Trying to plan ahead and get a place or two where I can have my car detailed. I want to be on the safe side with my expectations so I am looking for a place that can perform a full paint correction and do a fantastic detail job, engine, exterior and interior. Got a great recommendation for a place in Lancaster but that makes it a bit challenging to get the car there and back, etc. Also heard of a good place in Cherry Hill, NJ. The West Chester area has a lot of car dealers and a lot of detailers but are any of the detailers really good and qualified for a full paint correction on a Fcar?

Thanks. See all you local guys soon.

Go to our friend Barry in Lancaster. SOOOOO worth the trip. I think he actually does mobile detailing now so maybe he can come to you. Give him a holler! Here's a link to his site. www.presidentialdetails.com (mods, please remove if this is against the rules).

Barry is exactly who I was referring to in Lancaster. Guess I gotta figure out how to make the trip because I have heard about 100 recommendations for him. I'll suck up the time, miles on the car and the bit of a PITA to get it to the right guy.

Thanks. I owe Barry a return call anyway!

You're in New Jersey, and so is Johnny Dents (Cherry Hill). Several of us have used him, and have been very satisfied. I think you will, too.

There is a guy on here named Oakes. He is a detailer in West Chester. I recall him being recommended, but have not used him myself.

Yeah give him a call. Real down to earth guy and he does excellent work. Like I said, I'm pretty sure he's doing mobile detailing this year so maybe you can save the time/mileage on the car and have him come to you. I can't wait to get my car done again this spring. The winter has not been kind to my paint :)

I do my Porsche and my Gallardo myself, for me it is part of the experience of owning the car.

I would do it but have a lot to learn first. Washing is one thing but a full paint correction is beyond my abilities at this point.

It is not really that hard to learn, many of the online places that sell detailing supplies offer instructions booklets on how to detail your car. Though my garage looks like a detail shop with all the stuff I have.

Some people may not want to invest the time/money into learning it themselves. Where as I don't doubt you do a great job on your cars, there is something to be said about having your car professionally detailed. I do agree with you that learning how to properly clean and detail your car (along with changing the oil/brakes/etc. etc.) is part of the fun in owning these vehicles. But sometimes you gotta let a pro take over :)

Not to mention the STEEP learning curve. The first time my buddy used compound on a car, he made the finish look like stainless steel. There is detailing and then there is DETAILING. I am good on an interior and I am the best Glazer and waxer you guys know :) , but I learned the hard way to stay away from real compounds and non-orbital buffers.

I don't consider myself a moron---though others may disagree---but if you want to see fireworks and smoke, just give me a cutting compound and a porter-cable.

    LOL

Moderators please delete this if you think I am self promoting. I have no reason to do so, I'm just trying to help others understand what a true correction is. There are many ways of detailing a car. To some its just getting the car clean and to others its a complete rejuvination of every interior and exterior surface. Then there are those who not only make a car look new, but take it to a whole new level. Now lets look at this in pictures. here is a vehicle I did This Hummer was just recently detailed 3 weeks prior to me receiving it. This is what some would cal la good buff lol. To me its what I call a cheap job to get the paint shiny. What happened here they used a filler or glaze to hide the defects and make it look good for a week. In the below photos you can see an obvious differnce of the work performed. This vehicle was fully corrected with out using any fillers or glazes.

I want you to understand that this hummer is a 30 grand car. If your looking to cherish your new purchase for a lifetime. You should understand there are very few detailers who understand how to truley clean a vehicle, correct a vehicle, then help presrve a vehicle. Now I do not own a ferrari. I know many guys who own them and I'm sure they fully understand its not just about a detail or a so called quick buff. There's more to it. Its about how to preserve your dancing pony. Its a complete systematic rejuveination of the vehicles entire surface. I do wish the OP the best of luck when choosing a detailer or doing it yourself.

    Barry,

Do you offer mobile services? Getting the to and from Lancaster is the issue. Actually, keeping it clean on the way home could be tough. I'd get a great detialed car but would it be dirty and a waste by the time I get it home?

Well you might be right, I actually taught one of Algars detailers how to do it, but he still messed up a few times, had to help him fix it. I guess I have been doing it so long it is 2nd nature to me.

On February 23, 2010, at 7:23AM, Bufferbarry, as he is called, squished the collective testicles of Ferrari owners everywhere by equating Ferrari ownership to being a collector of My Little Pony Memorabilia, a favorite of little girls the world over. Whether it was a fair comparison or not, the response was swift and unexpected. Ferrari owners suddenly found themselves more introspective...more in touch with their feminine side. Gone forever were symbols of male strength, such as Rearing Horses and bulls. Replaced forever by softer symbols, such as puppies, flowers, and pastels. The NFL network saw its market share eaten by the Lifetime Network, and bikini waxing suddenly became gender neutral.

Some proud owners, such as Bob Craig, weathered the storm and fiercely defended the once storied marque. Others, like Joe M., comfortably made the switch, replacing their driving shoes with ballet shoes, dusting off their Joanie Mitchell collection and plucking the fiery symbol of the Scuderia Ferrari and replacing it with a nice swath of earth tones.

And from beyond, with pen in hand, sat Joe Zaff, watching all this unfold from the safety of his Mondial, a car so manly and unapologetic in its aggression, it stood as the lone symbol of virility among those to whom Pink was just the color of watered down blood.

    ;)

How long does it generally take you to detail the exterior of a car? I recently purchased a 22 year old black car with some very annoying swirls on every panel. Do you need the car overnight? Or can I plan to have a meal, see a movie, do some shopping, and then come back for the car?

Yes, most people do not really understand what goes into a full/real detail or paint correction. I love when I quote a guy a price and he looks at me funny and says he knows a guy that can do it for $75 to $150 bucks. Most people understand the difference when I explain to them all the steps that go into a real detail with the claying, paint correction, treating the rubber seals, weather stripping and leather and then application of a quality paint sealant or wax and actually takes 8 to 16 hours or more.

To most people a detail job entails a wash, quick once over with a cheap cleaner wax and actually does more damage to the finish than good.
