Can an 1984 Boxer bbi be registered in new jersey without epa paperwork?
You can replace missing paperwork, if it was passed. If not, I'd be nervous about registering it ANYWHERE!
You know truthfully we are getting close to "no one cares"...about the issue. If you have the title work done based upon another State's documents, and your insurance carrier takes the VIN number, to provide Proof of Insurance....you are probably home free. In Texas they quitting smogging the car and call it antique at 25 years of age....that's the reason I bought all my 1977s....we are 'there' now for your car. But more to the issue if your car was brought into the USA , 'in the day'......somebody got that acceptance done. You can take this to PMs if you want to... Alan I looked at an early Boxer here that was sent back to Italy, and when they brought it BACK (the second time into USA) had to scamble to find the documents, or it was going to be seized...THAT is the real issue I would not want someone to take MY car away....
Even if not required, you can contact Richard Merritt, US-DOT at 202-366-5300. Give him the last 5 numbers of yor car's serial number and he will tell you if the car is here legally. If so, for $19 he will have a copy of the DOT compliance letter mailed to you. Its a nice record to have of your car. That's what I did when I first bought my BB512i and got them in the mail a few days after my phone call...
Thanks, Frank, for the phone numbers!!! That's really what I was getting at, unless it wandered into the US recently, it probably DID have some.... Or you could borrow Frank's, and use White Out...... There ARE a number of them lurking in Canada, that have never been modified or brought in.....so it's possible.
I was just at nj dmv, they do not ask for the epa papers however, there seems to be a problem with certain vin# of low production cars since they updated there cmptrs. they are asking for vin # verifications from the previous state on any european cars unless someone has put one in the new system. This is true for the boxer unless someone registered one with in the last 2 weeks. But to answer the question no EPA was required ., ( although i think one should have it for themselves )
Since the car is over 25 years old, you can register QQ and you wouldn't need them. You may not want to register QQ - in that case, not sure of the treatment there.
I did Classic Registration Vs QQ. I go for an odometer check every two years and that is it. I think I am limited to 5K miles a year. No special plates required, just a different window sticker. Best thing I did. Adam
Are you sure you don't mean collector car registration (triangle sticker)? That is only open to cars less than 25 years old.
Collector car registration is not limited to less than 25 years old. I considered doing it on my '65 330 (ended up doing the regular inspection instead). I'm not sure what you need to initially register the car as an antique or collector car (check on the DMV's website). Once the car is in the system it no longer needs to have emissions checks. Regards, Art S.
That is not what the NJ MVC fact sheet says. http://www.nj.gov/mvc/pdf/Vehicles/FACT_SHEET-Collector_Car_Status.pdf http://liberty.state.nj.us/mvc/Vehicle/collector_vehicles.htm
I'm not in NJ, but I've never had anyone ask me for my EPA/DOT paperwork. However, as others have said, you want to make sure the car has it, since at least in theory if it's not here legally, EPA and/or DOT can have it crushed if they find it.
Same situation for me as Boxnodoc1 with NJ. 1985 Eurospec Testarossa Registered the car in 2006 I think. Had a problem with the VIN - Vin not in computer - very strange to me since it was currently registered, and I had a copy of the previous owener's registation. Gave them a tracing of the VIN, waited a bit, they did their research and the car was registered. They did not ask for DOT papers (which I had copies of). I registered the car as a regular car (no QQ, collector, etc.)
