No way to avoid it HAHA---I have done 2 remotes for friends Not anymore---parts shipping back to you tomorrow... Not all the time Yes, it is the outgassing of the fresh plastic into the coating....
You are 100% correct---You would not believe some of the plastic I see after stripping parts---From the factory with cuts, scrapes, gouges, pitting, etc--All covered up by the coating....
Your right--I did parts for a customers Enzo that rarely see's the light of day and the parts were nasty....
Off of an ENZO?!?!?! That is seriously retarded. That last one rolled off the assembly line, what...... 6 years ago? And you just cleaned up some goo on Enzo parts? Piss poor quality control, and on their last "super car". Shameful actually. But I guess it's just more business for you.
I have done 4 jobs for 2007 430 cars as well as Enzo, and numerous F50's... One of the worse jobs I have done came off a 2007 430....
I've opened BRAND NEW packages where the parts are already sticky. Seriously. I'll go grab one from the shelf.... hang tight.
180676, as it came out of the bag in a factory sealed box. Unsellable, unreturnable. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Holy crap! That's crazy!..... It does however rule out Armorall and/or sun exposure as the cause(s) though. I wonder why some parts do it and others don't? [So far, mine are all ok - I just went and checked - Again!] Cheers, Ian PS - Why the devil can't you return it? Seems like it's "unfit for intended use" to me? [EDIT: "Don't mention the wheel! ]
Daniel, How old is that part? That wouldn't be recent production would it? Are these simply parts made at the same time as the cars, so they get sticky, just sitting on the shelf?
That item is about 4 months old to me, but no idea how long it sat is some rat infested warehouse in Bologna or Modena. I remember getting it around Halloween. It was crap, right out of the box. {edited out comments, because I don't want to offend anyone who actually thinks this is a "high end" marque}
My 04 Challenge Stradale recently got the goo virus as well. I used Goo Gone to remove the soft touch paint coating and all is well now- The only minus of this option is you loose the white graphics on some of the buttons! I asked the dealer about it and they said they would be glad to repaint or replace the parts...for $1800! No warranty coverage, no admission of fault by Ferrari. Yes it's a dissapointment, it should not happen to a brand of this caliber. And if it does they should cover it even if out of warranty, as it's clearly a big problem.
I agree that it's not Armor-All or any other treatment that causes the stickiness. The new parts shown on this thread that are suffering from the problem confirm that. I cannot believe how Ferrari would allow such a problem to continue for so many years. I wonder whether Lamborhinis have the same problem. If it's any consolation, my 2004 Porsche GT3's radio knobs are feeling sticky. The car has never seen Armor-All (in fact never been readlly detailed inside - I hardly use it). But so far nothing else and certainly not as bad as the Ferrari interiors I've seen.
On the other hand, here is a 456 fog lamp switch where the paddle section remains absolutely perfect. It has been in inventory considerably longer then a previously shown 550 plate. I'd guess this switch has been on the shelf for 2-3 years. With these Ferrari parts in particular, it is a bit of a toss-up I'm afraid. (I took the picture this morning, so maybe the oils on my hand will start the degradation. We should check back in 6 months and see.) Image Unavailable, Please Login
I recall mentioning this on another thread on the same topic, but this might be interesting to you. Many years ago, I bought 2 deadblow hammers (the kind with lead shot in the head section so they don't bounce back upon impact) made in one piece out of an orange plastic. I believe it was by Stanley. About a year or 2 later, I noticed the hammers started to sweat and became sticky to the touch. I wiped them and in desperation put talcum powder on them Still they sweated. Then, one day, I picked up one and it just fell apart. The other also just broke up into pieces soon after. The plastic was "biodegrading." The same thing seems to be happening to the vents and other plastic bits of Ferraris, probably starting with the 348s. I look into their interiors and they just look horrible cheap. Tsl, tsk, Ferrari.
Let me know which buttons you did that lost the symbols---I may be able to help.... Other than the HVAC panel, the silver 456 parts do not suffer from this issue, at least I have never seen it
In my car the switch paddles were all fine- while several of the switch housings were all sticky. I don't think they are coated in the same stuff (or maybe they had already been wiped off). A couple of switches had no degradation whatsoever but I removed the coating anyway knowing it would happen. It came off just as easily as a slimy mess once I touched it with EasyOff. Also the white symbols for the switch are an insert that can be removed so you don't muck them up in the cleaning. Very disappointing they would use such terrible quality coatings on these cars.
Can this be interperited that complaints in writing have been acknowledged by some manufactuers (not only Ferrari by the sounds of this)
