Really digging this new style all the brands seem to be doing with their images. Very sharp, very bright colors, looks like a painting to me. But how is it done? Anyone done anything similar?

Also take a look at the RS5 images and the new 911 Turbo S, all seem to be done in the same kind of post-processing style.

    Stuff like this:

I don't really see what's new with that style...? But for the photo you posted, there sure is a lot of expensive light in that picture ;)

I don't know, just looking through some of the new cars and it seems many are using this same style. The Beetle was probably a bad example since it's stationary but how do you get that kind of lighting on a moving car, there must be a ton of photoshopping going on.

I may be completely wrong but my idea.

Porsche - This just looks like a rig shot to me that they must have had lights running next to the car (or they could have just placed the car in photo there but you can see the hot spots from lights on the side and back)

I may be wrong but i'm pretty sure the new Audi stuff is all CGI

Interesting, if it is a rig shot they did a helluva job. I could only imagine how hard it would be to set something like that up.

I wish there was a high-res shot of the RS5, but even then CGI has gotten so good it is ahrd to tell.

100% photoshop. Notice the extra artifacts of the shape of the bike around the edges of the bike... more like ghosting. Poorly done IMO.

    As to the OP...

Taking glossy high reflective surfaces appear as if they are not looks unreal. It's popular now... but IMO is too unrealistic. It's a combination of lighting stylizing, and tons of post processing.

It looks like HDRI to me. (High Dynamic Range Image). If it's well done, it looks great.

A lot of manufacturers use a program called Hypershot, it's a 3D rendering program with advanced cg+photography features. Check it out here: http://bunkspeed.com/gallery/

Audi's stuff is all CGI, I have an acquaintance who does some of it. A lot of the car manufactures are moving that way because it's much easier and cheaper then building a set or shooting on location, it gives you much more control, and it allows you to build a unique environment (notice how all the car commercials are shot at the same locations in LA....).

As far as the look in both the CGI and photographs it's primarily done in post.
