    I'm going to hazard a guess that it's an extra measure of safety to keep the tensioners in place in case one of their fastening bolts loosens. IE, if one of the tensioner's bolts gets loose, the bar will still basically keep that tensioner in place as long as the other tensioner's bolt is tight. Just a guess, though.

    The purpose for the cross bar is:
    1: Strenthen and support the extra strain on the front of the pulley mounts
    2: Stop/reduce flexing of the bolts under acceleration and deceleration
    3: Take up some of the load from the engine front casing, as the pulleys are bolted directly into the front of the engine block
    4: This has been added as a safety and strenghtening device for the race engine as it was under high stress, constantly used at high acceleration and high vibration
    5: Reduces the stress on the top side of the roller bearing in the tensioner, making it wear evenly and not just on the top side, this wear can be caused by the bearing alone taking up the minute side to side movement cause by the bolts flexing

    We will be measuring the lift and duration on the next project day, we will also be measuring the timing degree angles for each camshaft relative to the crankshaft position

    All settings will be measured via degree angle and also dial guage readings

    Details will be posted as we progress, as we are still waiting for the specified figures from simpson racing.

    We are just making sure that whats has been done by the original builder has been done and also making sure that we dont have any issues after installing the engine, we have already found a couple of potential problems whilst just checking it over!

    The engine has been in storage for a few years, so internal inspection is really crucial at this point of the project.

    Just thought I'd let you guys know, LamboRaj is Raj who's doing the work on my 348. :D

    Ever since he found out about the engine, he's been in a state of shock and denial. Rumour has it he wants to put a jet engine in his 348 to out do me on this one. :D

    I'll do a little video of both cars together soon.

    Will do :D

    I've asked Simpson for info and they will be sending it back to me. Will report back then.

    Today we did the engine timing and started to strip down the engine.

    We had to do the timing before hand so that we had some figures. Simpson haven't given us the engine info as we requested so we had to do it outselves.

    First, some of the bits that we've alrady taken off the engine.

    Whilst checking the cams, Raj noticed that there was very little space beteen the cam and teh engine head.

    He measured the gap and it was .25mm. That's a quarter of a millimetere.

    That could be a potential problem,l so he'll be grinding the heads down a little to increase the gap.

    Belt coming off.

    Some of you may recall that I said it was an Alfa romeo belt. Upon checking we found that it didn't sit right on the pulleys, so we'll be throwing it away and getting something better.

    Raj made a point of asking me to popst this up for you. :D



    Right Hand Inlet Cam:

    Start 40 degrees after TDC (Start inlet open)

    Finish 102 degrees after TDC (fully closed)

    Cam duration: 62 degrees



    Right Hand Exhaust Camshaft:

    Exhaust cam open at 112 degrees

    Fully closed at 42 degrees after TDC



    Next stage will be to remove the heads and checking the crank.
