Rolex doesn't make what exactly, pvd finished watches? No, they don't - but a couple of custom houses do custom work on Rolex and they are in high demand - so a rep with a pvd finish is not at all out of line. If you're talking about Rolex reps in general not looking "real" you may want to look again. There are reps out there fooling authorized dealers. I've seen a gold Rolex that went to Rolex in NY before it got flagged as not being fully authentic. The dealer had no doubt that it was "real".
I was talking more about the harley one and the green GMT. They just look off to me. The gmt isnt that bad, rolex may have one close to it but the harley one looks way off, especially the bezel. I was refering to the ones ive seen in this thread. I have no idea what is out there in the fake rolex world and how well they fool people. I just remembered about the 50 anniversary GMT so I guess the knock off is on the right track on that one.
The rep world has come along way - these aren't the knockoffs that you buy on the street in NY city for example. Some of these will fool all but the most expert observer and even then he might need a loupe and a known genuine article along side for comparison. Plenty of junk still available, too, of course.
Just on that note, I dont buy these rep's to fool anyone. I tell all my friends that they are replica watches. I buy them cause they are cool. And like everyone who buys these reps, if we could afford the real thing we wouldnt be buying the replicas. Also, I didnt know Rolex didnt make a Harely Davidson Rolex. I just like the look of it.
No matter how good they are they are still fakes. Why not just buy the real thing if all the effort is made to find a perfect fake.
No, they don't come with any box or papers at all, you can order a box from them with the papers for about $100.
Maybe because some like to wear sweet looking wrist art without the associated self indulgent waste of money. Just sayin' Beev
I presume you would buy a fiero based replica Bugatti Veyron as well? Since the real thing is grossly overpriced?
That's a ridiculous analogy. There is no "fiero based replica Bugatti Veyron" that comes anywhere remotely close to the real car. That's totally different than a replica that an authorized dealer might have to examine through a loupe to be sure of what he is dealing with. For the record I own several real high end watches with Rolex among them. I like the reps and enjoy wearing them. I'll probably add 3 more very soon. No matter how wealthy I was I don't think I could ever go out and buy 3 high end watches in one shot.
I don't make tons of money, $13 an hour, so buying gen is not an option. I buy the replicas for their asthetics. I could care less what the movement is or if it's 100% accurate. I just like them for how they look.
And that is the point of a replica. More power to you if you have good taste. I have no problem with them myself. But to buy one because you think the authentic version is a rip off? That's just being ignorant. Which makes my Veyron analogy very fitting, despite there not actual being a replica of the Veyron. If you want it to be even more accurate? Replace the word Veyron with "Testarossa", since there are replicas of that that look accurate from 50 feet away to the untrained eye.
To chime in; a car and watch is different. A lot of what you are paying is the name because you can buy a replica with the same jewel movement as the "gen" but with the replica car you can the "ferrari " engine or anything close.
I understand what you guys are saying, I love the look of these watches as well but you cant deny the FACT that you are contributing to Trademark Infringement... " Any product that includes copyright and/or trademark names or logos (without the copyright and/or trademark owner's permission) is considered to be counterfeit. On January 17, 2001, the U.S. District Court in Columbia, SC, charged two individuals with selling allegedly counterfeit versions of Rolex watches. Their website claimed the watches to be "replicas". Mark Dipadova was later sentenced to 24 months in prison and was ordered to pay $138,264 in restitution for "trafficking counterfeited trademarks", while Rufus Todd James was sentenced to 36 months in prison, and was ordered to pay $116,779 in restitution on a similar charge. "
Never denied it. Never mentioned it either. Tangent: One of my favorite publicity stunts from years back was Cartier hiring a steamroller to crush a load of fakes that had been confiscated by US Customs.
***I take no personal stance in the matter, I dont mind replica watches for reasons below, but I also dont have one at the moment either. My comments are merely to educate a few others*** if you want to compare a watch to a car... a replica Ferrari will come with a say chevy engine or pontiac engine and is a far cry from a real Ferrari engine, visually it may be spot on but performance is not even close. A higher end replica watch say a replica Paneria could have a Valjoux 7750 Movement inside it which is pretty much what all high end watches use anyways. the differences are that some are manufactured in house, some choose to use different materials in the construction, some choose to replace bearings with more jewels (ruby or sapphire) where others prefer ceramics. Some houses choose to use synthetic or man made jewels rather than naturals, where other houses prefer to match their naturals near perfectly even though they wont be seen. Its these variations that can add cost and slight differences in performance but overall the movement is still a Valjoux 7750 Movement and only capable of so much. If you want to compare it to a car now...its like taking two identical seats in a car and taking one of them and re-upholstering it in a hide from a calf that was hand raised by a virgin on only the best food, then stitching it with fibers of gold or platinum. Now take the other and reupholster it in a good quality widely available leather and stitch it with colored thread. essentially there is your analogy. Replica cars and watches are two completely different industries and cannot be compared. If your going to try to compare them first try to learn about the watch industry and how actual watches are made and what components they use. The same Valjoux 7750 Movement in your sieko is also found in rolex, breitling, paneria, nardin, A Lange, and just about every watch company out there. In reality there is only about 7 DIFFERENT types of movements.
Please give one example of a Seiko that comes with a Valjoux 7750 in it. Seiko make all of their own movements AFAIK and their competitor to the Valjoux would be their 6S37.
Good catch, Seiko I used as an example of a massed produced watch company but indeed seiko is one of the few houses that manufacturers their own movements (although still based off the original 7 patents of watch movements). a better example would be the Bulova house which also produces accutron and a few other labels. the Seiko 6S37 is a very comparable movement to the 7750 though. Seiko has really hidden alot of its brand from the US markets. They make some really nice high end watches that no one ever thinks about such as the Grand Seiko, Credor, and the Ananta.
