S.p.A. is an abbreviation for Societa per Azioni (Italian).

It is the equivalent of Ltd and PLC in the UK, and of Inc. in the United States.

Societa` per Azioni really means the Company Stock is traded to the public.

Ohhh... that would be great, to own a share in Ferrari... is it open to "The Public" or only to the "Italian Public"?

Ferrari is owned by Fiat. So you would have to buy stock in Fiat to 'own' a part of Ferrari. Suddenly doesn't seem like such an appealing idea does it?!

Ferrari is owned by Fiat's industrial holding company which is a very separate entity from Fiat Automotive which owns the other brands like Fiat, Lancia , Maserati and Alfa Romeo.
The industrial holding company is in OK shape and has many varied interests including publishing, real estate etc
The company Generated nearly 60 billion euros in revenue in 2008 and over $4 billion euros in profit.

While I applaud your patience in reiterating this oft ignored reality, sadly it is distinction without a difference of late.
