I found a source to re-do a leather wheel, even with the french stitch. I was referred by Tim Stanford to Ron Reed, a craftsman located out in the woods of Central Florida. I was up there this week on business and took a couple of hours to swing by Ron's shop to see his work. Amazing! I am really glad I took the time to go meet him. True craftsman would be an understatement. In addition to being a leather craftsman he is a metalsmith, he even has a foundry out back.

If you need a refurb on your steering wheel give Ron a call at (352) 589-0474.

Ron used to live in Lantana back in the late 60's (assuming it's the same Ron Reed) he used to make awsome bucket seats using steel tubing (conduit) that were in demand for racers, he built a dune buggy with a tube frame (also of conduit) quiet a character, but a really smart guy...

Same guy! I really enjoyed spending a couple hours with him today. From looking at his work in person to the pictures he broke out to seeing the all-wood canoe he hand-built hanging from the ceiling of his shop, it was a true pleasure.

Trust me guys if you need a wheel redone, call Ron.

The covering has shrunk away from the seam. The leather seems to be glued on, not stiched??? and a small piece about the size of a dime is missing at the bottom.

There are a few wheels available out there that look very close to stock, (77 GTB), so, is it less expensive to have one recovered or just buy new???

    thanks,
    chris

Chris, it depends on the wheel but it's all handwork. Ron quoted me $225 which is not bad for a 328 wheel.

The leather is glued and stitched.

You can get a Momo for probably $100, if you want to show the car recovering or finding a wheel from a parts car is the only way to go.

Same with the 328 steering wheels. I purchased if not THE last, very close to it, from Ferrari UK many years ago. There are many wheels made by Momo that are very similar, or remakes by them, but they have minor details missing that may or may not bother some owners.

Duane- Tell me more. I intended to have them recover an OEM carbon fiber trim wheel I picked up for my 575M. My problem is finding someone who can come up with Charcoal 4304 leather.

Duane- Thanks for the info. Especially for a wheel that retails for $4500. Admittedly only paid $300 for mine out of a wrecked car, but it is pretty rough.

Constance- That really looks good. You have a great touch with a needle and thread. I am afraid if I tried that, though, it would look like an explosion in a clothing factory.
