Lets do it during a track weekend at spring mtn. Steve are you capable of taking the box out? It is easier than pulling the motor. pumpkin off and bumper on it slides right out and drops on the floor. You could road trip to LA. We could diagnose all the needed parts 1 day teardown then you order weeks go by then 1 day assembly depending on how many beers we drink.
First off, thanks very much guys for all the well wishes, encouragement, and Birthday wishes! Thank god for the Brotherhood! I love all you guys! And thanks a million to you Scott for the offer of your contribution, you're a good man, but I couldn't accept that. Ok, as far as how to go about all this, Ernie seems open to the idea of helping, I got a PM from Bruce, who also seems willing to help, and FBB just confused the crap outta me! Bruce also asked if I could take the box out... i've never done it, but I have the skills to figure it out... plus, my old man is a TV repair man, he has an ultimate set of tools! I'll do whatever it takes to get this fixed in whatever process you guys want... For me, it would be easier if you came here to Vegas, perhaps an extra day in town for the Paupers Run? A long weekend at Spring Mountain? Or if I have to ship it back and forth, so be it! I'll pay for gas, plane tickets, hotel room, beer, wings, whatever! Just tell me what you wanna do.
You guys are great! It may not be fixed yet but Steves day is looking brighter, happy birthday to you
What a great group of guys!!! Steve my dad was NOT a TV repair man and does NOT have an ultimate set of tools but if you need an extra hand I'm here..
Wow very sorry to read about this especially on the eve of your birthday maybe it will work out. try to have a happy day.
Yikes!! I may be next then?!?! I can barely hear a whining sound, and it is not constant, but definitely the odd time I can hear it whine. Is that normal? Was yours a constant whining, and was it loud/obvious? Mine certainly isn't obvious, nor loud, nor constant.
I am curious about this also. My '90 TS has whined since I bought it a year ago. It's a constant whine under acceleration, deceleration, light power on or full out nailing the loud pedal. Changed the gearbox oil.....nothing on the magnet. Had the box removed last year at Cavallo in Carlsbad to check the infamous "lockrings". Everything looked good. I have driven the car with this noise 1500 miles since. The whine has not gotten worse. Here are a few pictures of the diff apart, and two bearing races that didn't look good. The car had been tracked before I got it..... maybe something got too hot at one time or the oil pump bearings let go and the previous owner fixed it. Wouldn't the oil pump screen catch most of the bad stuff and keep it from being recirculated? Like to hear from the stooges on this one. Steve, just saw this thread, so sorry on the trans..that sucks. What doesn't suck is the great group of guys that may be helping you out. You don't get any better than that, stand up guys everyone of them.Oh yeah!, Happy Birthday Steve.
Yeah, go ahead and jerk that puppy out. Pull the pump cover off the driver's side and see what you've got there. Not rocket science-ordinary people can do it! That'll be a good start. WARNING! Offering to feed FBB is more expensive than a new box!!!!!!
I was reading about your bad luck so sorry... But it never ceases to amaze me how lucky we all are to have found F-Chat and what a great bunch of guys live here. Thanks to all of you for always being around. Bill
That's what i'll do then, but I actually cant start dismantling the car until after the 29th, I have to be able to get the car out of the garage the weekend of the 27th-28th due to an unchangeable and totally unrelated project.
Sorry to hear about this, Steve. I hope you're back on the road again soon. And hope you had a happy birthday. All the best, Andrew.
Funny you mention it, when I first bought my 348 5 yrs ago, I could have sworn I heard a whine/bearing noise coming from the right hand rear. I thought it was the right rear wheel bearing starting to get noisey. From memory, it would only make the whining noise when I would slow down and come to a stop. Couldnt hear it any other time. I never really investigated it back then and It has since gone away. Perhaps there was NEVER a sound there to begin with, or I am just 'used to it' now and its still there ready to blow my gearbox up. Or it has fixed itself. ****s me, either way I will replace the bearings in that box when I pull the engine out for the major. Do it once, do it right!! I dont cut corners when it comes to this ****. I just have to stop driving the car to pull the engine out.
Thanks Pap. My car is still in storage, I plan on taking it out very soon and once I do I will have another listen at it and report here what I find.
I just can't get over the fact that the Brotherhood is there for you to help you with your problem. This site and the Ferrari community is nothing short of simply amazing. I'm sorry to hear of your problem, but at the same time it must be nice to know that you have a terrific group of knowledeable and capable guys who are willing to help reduce the sometimes ridiculous costs of operating these machines. Kudos to the guys who are gonna help ya.
Good man. I am hoping to take my car for a drive in a few hours. Getting a new pantry put in the kitchen, so we took Poncho around to Nicole's Dads place so the kitchen people can do their job without Poncho jumping all over them. Soooooooooooo, I will leave Poncho there for the day so I can open the back gates and take the Ferrari for a drive without having to open and close gates/move blocks etc..etc.
If my gearbox blows up, I will pull it out and send it over to the Stooges to fix for me. Cheers mate!! All good here brother!
From the limited infor that I have gleaned by joining this website I think I have reconsidered my thoughts about the Stooges generousity. I'm guessing that they will do anything for a few beers and some BS'in together. Guess I'll have to remember this when my F1 system fails--oh WAIT!!! I'm not part of the 348 brotherhood...
Yeah man...see if you can get the gearbox out. Then there are any number of ways we can get together for a stoogefest as long as you promise not to laugh at our "especial" tools. You up for this Ernie and Bruce? When all three of us are together it is pretty funny. Hey your wife gotta toaster oven? Does your mail come rubber banded? Save us a few rubber bands. OMG are you sure you want us anywhere close to your gearbox?
Just saw this, Steve. Very sorry that you've got a problem, but at least be thankful it didn't grenade like Daniel's! Sounds like the Brotherhood to the rescue! I'd also be very interested in hearing how much noise you had, and when you had noise, per Mike's question. That info can help owners learn what to listen for, before a failure occurs. On my car, I have a light whine at very light throttle (on and off as I lightly press and release throttle). I seem to have it a little more in 5th though. PS - There are some good 348 gearbox threads in the archives, but if the Brotherhood does get together to work on our box, more pics of the process, checking clearances, etc. etc. could only help! (Hint Hint) Also Happy Birthday !!!!!
LOL... The way I see it, every magician has a different set of tools! I'm not married, my place is total bachelor pad! Plenty of rubber bands too! No toaster oven, but if I need to get one, I will! I would be proud, honored, and thrilled to host a Stoogefest... I will take good care of you guys, and with the rest of the Vegas guys hangin out too, we'll have a blast!! Bruce has already agreed to come to Vegas once I get the gearbox out, which I will have done by the 1st weekend in April. BTW, I have a close friend that is a top notch general mechanic... I showed him the shrapnel, and before I could even tell him where they came from, he said "those are pieces of a bearing casing". Based on all the symptoms, this really solidifies my theory that its the output shaft bearing that is bad.
