No. The reason is because that screen is on the other side of the bearing. It only "filters" the small outlet hole where the oil pump gearing is located. The bearing that usually destroys itself is on the inside of the left hand side cover. On the lay shaft if my memory serves me correct (?). There are two bearings, one next to the oil pump ,and one closer to the inside of the gearbox. The bearing closest to the inside of the gearbox is the one that normally gives up the ghost. There is nothing "filtering" that bearing, or the other ones for that matter. In my opinion that "filter" is pretty much just there to make you feel better.
Steve buddy so sorry my man OUCH! trust me I know how this feels IT SUCKS Sounds like all the right boys are getting in your corner to help you out thats awesome, should make for an interesting photo opportunity before and after the beers . Hang in there, you already can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
At last! Get ready! The blockbuster epic you've all been waiting for! The world awaits! Finally, the filming of the movie Cecil B DeMille wanted to make until his dying day! THE STOOGES GO TO VEGAS!
3 for 3!? Wow, i'm practically speechless! Not sure what I did to deserve this incredible display of support, or how i'll ever make it up to you guys! But it will certainly stay on top of my priority list to find a way! I do know one thing, there will probably be enough pics and video taken to make a movie!! All we need now is a plan! We can do this ANY time you guys are all available after April 1st, and I will have the gearbox out of the car by then. Also, I would like to extend an invitation to any and all f-chatters who want to come to Vegas and hang out with us while we do this!
Sorry to hear about the trans Steve. May be coming out to Vegas early June for a fight---If it isn't fixed by then, I'll help anyway I can
ok guys, not only does it suck for me that this happened, but I realize that a side affect is that it intensifies some degree of paranoia for the brotherhood... "yet another gearbox failure". To help alleviate some of this stress, i'm going to summarize my symptoms as beast I can in text format... First of all, it is normal for the 348 drivetrain to have what I call a "hum" sound that is a low tone and pretty consistent. I believe this is more a result of mild vibration harmonics. My problem was quite different... I quickly developed a much higher pitched, and MUCH louder "whine" that would increase in pitch as I accelerated under load, in all gears. The sound was very similar to a turbo spooling whine. The whine would instantly stop when I pushed the clutch pedal and changed gears, but instantly returned when I released the clutch pedal and accelerated. At consistent cruising speed in 4th or 5th gear, you couldn't hear the whine at all. If I was in neutral or in gear with the clutch pedal pushed down, there was no whine, even if I revved the engine... The whine was only audible under load and acceleration. After about 3 months of this, I developed a tiny leak of gear oil from the inspection plate/screen under the clutch cover. I also had a few very tiny spatters of gear oil on the rear bumper cover after a spirited drive. Aside from the whine and the leak, there were no problems at all... the car drove, and shifted the same as always... there were absolutely NO driveability issues. The only thing that caused me to park the car was that it was time to change the gear oil, and thus discovering all the shrapnel on the drain plug! I hope this makes at least a few of you feel better!
Thanks Robbie, but I am really hoping this disaster is ancient history by early June! But we should hookup when you're in town regardless!!
Steve, keep us all posted about when this may take place...hell im always down for a trip back to vegas...and im pretty handy with a wrench.... Sean
Steve, Didn't see this thread over the weekend. Although a bummer I'm glad you caught it before it completely trashed on you. I do remember the whine when you took me back to my hotel after C & C in February. Looks like the cavalry is coming to the rescue. I may have to make a trip back out to Vegas soon. Happy to help as I have been known to twist a wrench or 2. Keep us posted on your progress and your upcoming "Stoogefest Adventure"! BTW - Happy belated Bday! Things are looking up!
SWEET!!! now we just need to set a date. This is awesome!! Whoda thunk this tragedy could turn into something FUN!?! viva 348 Brotherhood! PS. Steve, maybe you can schedule your trip around this! It would be great if you could join us!
Everything is possible Steve, just have faith ! Come over CC next Saturday, so we can look all the Lancia Cars !
So true but if you read the fine print it states and I quote "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" "Except for those few exceptional lucky distinguished individuals that belong to the 348/355 brotherhood, then all must be revealed with photos and descriptive stories to the rest of the Brothers, no exceptions" end quote Well thats what it says No really Look I don't make the rules I just enforce them .
im sure your working out dates...i may have to get my tonsils cut out the first part of april so if its then i may be out! damn it damn it damn it. hey maybe your car will get surgery at the same time as me!! LOL
QUOTE ONLYEST: For the record, I changed the gear oil almost exactly 2 years ago, there were almost no metal filings on the plug last time I did it... I have been running Redline SuperLight since then. so do we think the redline had something to do with this? It would be intersting to know if all of the Grenaded boxes were on factory oil or had been switched to redline? i havent been on here long enough to have read the horrors of gearboxes but......many of you have carnal knowledge of them!!
LMAO!!! Well since the guy's are going down to Vegas maybe we should all go down and have that Fchat get together. That's what the brotherhood is about and I'm proud I'm apart of this brotherhood. Cheers!
