I was at that race, the sound was even better in person, the crowd went crazy when Alesi finally won, # 27 in victory lane in Canada, could not have been more perfect! It was fantastic to hear the V8, V10 and V12s all on the same track.

And on top of that, that actually LOOKED like a race car!

Today's cars look like upside-down canoes.

Go Google-Video 'ferrari girl' for great sound, and somewhere there is a video of 'Steve's F40 turbo on the dyno', both sound great, few sound as good as a v12 at full song though.

The vocal multi-layered smoothness of these V12's is lush !

I find the the current V8's to be harsh and thin sounding, in fact only since the introduction of the V8's have i started to wear ear plugs at the races, as the frequency's produced are bad for inner ear resonance, and due to the engine sounds not being particularly nice, its not worth wasting my ear drums for !

Exactly! Being young and dumb we always shunned ear plugs, but sitting on the main straight, the V-12 would literally distort your hearing when they went by at full song. And you could always tell where on the track the Ferraris were just by listening.

To those of you who were there, do you remember the track announcer pleading with the crowd not to rush the track? He was saying they could lose their license, etc. Pretty funny, although it was fortunate nobody was hurt.

It's really crazy to see how much Max's cheap F1 has really destroyed the sport.

Are the v8 engines sounds unattractive? One of the reasons that I've always wanted to attend a live f1 race to hear how they sound in person.

yes they don't sound good. I loved the V12s and the V10s. The V8's just don't sound nice.

They certainly sound different to the older cars, but no way unpleasant. Last year's Belgian Grand Prix was the first Grand Prix I had been to for 8 years. Standing just above Eau Rouge as the cars came past was still pretty awe inspiring. The noise hits you in the chest and you can hear it bouncing of the barriers as they pass. It is amazing. The sad thing is that they do all sound the same. Even in the V10 days you could identify some of the cars by their sound. I wonder if the Cosworths will sound different this year?

Ahh, the best is when the field had V12, V10 and V8 all racing...could tell the cars based on the noises they made.

That car is my favorite Ferrari F1 car of all time. Perfect shade of Red; V12, beautiful styling. Before the high nose became the norm.........

I saw one at Road America for the BRHC event a couple years ago. There's a group that runs an Alesi Ferrari along with some other mid-late 90s chassis, like a snake-themed Jordan and Benetton from that time. Don't know what they call themselves, but it was cool to see F1 in any form at RA.

Back in 2007 (and end of 2008 testing in Barcelona, when the Brawn was still honda) you could easily identify the honda engines. VERY VERY loud to the point it actually hurt my ears at copse!

I really miss the V10 era. And the V12s for that matter.
