Good to hear. Their cars seem vastly improved over the 986/996 generation.

Lots of threads on here praise the bullet-proof reliability of the Porsche (especially as opposed to the Ferrari).

    My experience:
1996 911 C4. Back window exploded one night sitting in the garage.
1996 911 TT. Belt tensioner fell off.
    1999 911 C2. No problems.
    1999 911 C2. Second example, no problems.
2000 911 C2 Cab. Replaced transmission linkage twice and transmission once.
2001 911 TT. Motor out for disassembly and repair twice.
    2002 911 TT. No problems.
    2004 Cayenne TT. No problems.
    2005 911 C2S. Replace motor.
    2006 Cayenne TT. No problems.
    2007 911 TT. No problems.
    2008 Cayenne TT. No problems.
2009 911 C2S. High pressure fuel pump failed. Stopped car in traffic. Replaced.
2010 Panamera TT. Lots of problems, still in the shop.

    And in comparison:
    1996 F355 Ferrari. No problems
1999 550 Maranella. Minor trim issues.
    2003 360 Spider. No problems
    2004 Challenge Stradale. No problems
    2006 F430. No problems.

"1996 911 C4. Back window exploded one night sitting in the garage."

Remember that happening 4-5 times on 964 and 993 customer cars......never did figure out why either.

Were the miles driven approximately the same for each car?

Most of the cars were kept about a year to eighteen months. The 1996 911 TT was kept about three years and so was the 1999 550 Maranello. The Maranello was used heavily and so were the 1996 and 2002 Turbos.

When the troublesome cars were in the shop for motor rebuilds and motor replacements, the dealership gave me new Porsches for a loaner. I could keep them up to 2500 miles and then return them for a new one with less miles (so they could sell them as new). A 2005 Boxster S, a loaner with 39 miles on it, wouldn't stay in second gear. The shift lever would pop back into neutral while you were driving. A 2005 Carrera Cabriolet with less than 50 miles on it had horrible steering wheel groans and squeeks when turning left. These were probably easy things to fix, but they were initial quality concerns that I found to be the rule, rather than the exception. I'm not a picky person and fixed, to me, is as good as having never happened, but sometimes, if it takes weeks to fix, my confidence in Porsche is shaken.

maybe it's just me, but given that experience I would have probably stopped buying Porsches around 2001...

Other than Ferraris, nothing else really appeals to me. And partial reinforcement (as in the ones with no problem) creates a harder habit to break than if they all were bad. At that same time, I had several Mercedes, a Lotus, a Ford Lightning and a Chevrolet HHR. They were all fairly decent cars, but they were just that — cars. The Ferraris and Porsches were ultimates, somewhat quirky sometimes but the promise was always there that they would be great.
