Yes, unfortunate. They had to have been racing but since they were cops no mention of that in the article.

If he was in fact racing, the cop's "Get out of jail free" card means nothing to the 3 kids left behind...

I saw this over on the Register last night too. I wonder how much "Seat Time" he had in his Viper ? Just seems odd for a 20 year veteran cop to go blasting down Golden West
and kill himself and his passenger. Very sad indeed. RIP.

Someone mentioned in the OC Reg blog that the driver had "just bought the Viper" and was showing his "new sports car" to his father in law so he "took him for a ride".

Once again we have an example of a new owner with too much car and the results are
    the end of precious lives.

You have to feel sorry for the family. To lose a father and a grandfather in the same act... tragic.

They were driving wrecklessly in a residential area.

Pictures have been posted up on the Viper boards.

Let's not blame the car here.

I feel pity for the family.

Yes...many times. But I've not been stupid. You buy a 500 HP car you'd better effin know how to drive it. If you don't, either don't buy it, get schooling on how to do so, or know that you have GREAT self-control and utter respect for what's under your right foot. If the guy had been t-boned by a drunk driver or something of that ilk, I would feel very bad for him. But this wasn't the case: He was speeding and showing off, though his driving "talents" should have told him otherwise; i.e. he was stupid, plain and simple. And his stupidity took an innocent life with it.
