There have been a few posts recently, where drivers of Ferrari's were hassled by police for issues that had nothing to do with anyone's safety. The recent Chapel Street and Mansfield posts are 2 examples.

The last time I was stopped for some petty, non safety issue related allegation (again), by traffic cops earlier this year, I could not hold back. I told them that they have totally lost sight of what they are there for. They are not there to hassle citizens, but to ensure safety on the roads.

The community puts laws in place, and the community gives police a lot of
power, and pays the salaries of police. Many police fail to use common sense, and fail to disregard their own predjudices when they attempt to intimidate members of the community by their attitude using the excuse of "the letter of the law".

We all mourn the death of common sense, when it comes to this "nanny state" (or in fact nanny country), attitude of law makers, and especially the way the laws are enforced by traffic police.

I have driven in many countries around the world, where laws are in place, but police use a lot of discretion when inforcing laws. There are many countries where cars travel well above the speed limit, but are not booked by police if they are deemed to be driving safely. What about all the crowded cities where people park on the footpath, on corners, or where ever they can, and they are left alone.

In Australia, the same attitudes, over regulation, and "letter of the law" enforcement, occur in every area from town planning, tax, and every other area of government administration.

It all makes me sick, and everyone should shout this as loud as they can like I do. This over regulation, and over zealous enforcement is a great drain and cost to the country, and ads to the many other innefficencies that make Australia uncompetitive. The sense of unfairness also leads to malcontent amoungst citizens, who become less productive members of the community.

Getting back to cars, my attitude to Traffic cops has changed the last 10 years, especially since driving THE red cars, and other performance cars. They certainly have put me offside.

That's not the point. If you earn the money, pay ridiculous taxes you have the right to buy whatever your taste and your wallet allows.

And the same attitude is shown in all walks of life in this socialist country. It is not just cars.

The Lewis hamilton incident (subject of a separate post), is more of the same issue. Was anyone in danger? Any common sense shown by police, just blindly follow the letter of the law. Could tall poppy be part of this. And what was the point of impounding a Mercedes loan car-just a waste of people's time, effort, and money.

There's no disputing the fact that Hamilton is a more than capable driver. However, I've not read any clear recount of what exactly happened, and as we know the media is the last place anyone would expect to find a factually accurate depiction of any event. So any speculation about how safe or dangerous or risky it was is all a bit of conjecture imo.

The only fact we're all aware of is that driving on public roads contains all sorts of variables, many of which are outside of your control, which makes it hard to justify why you'd drive a car fast enough in a built up area to start this so called fishtail in the first place. Hamilton, being the person that is, with the profile that he has, probably should have known better than to be drawing attention to himself in the suburbs of Melbourne like that, and he rightly has admitted it.

Traffic laws are another issue altogether...
