De Tomaso Pantera

Yeah-looks like a gt5s-I have a 1988 GT5s and absolutely one of my favorites-

 

I LOVE the pre-L models (the powder blue one)...clean lines, small tight chrome bumpers, exquisite design

...much like the Countach, they look good all fluffed up, but the early simpler cars are still my fave

 

Absolutely love the Great Cats!!

 

Pantera = WIN!

No, it's a 74 L model with kit.

I'm in the process of removing the front and rear bumpers and having shorter Euro style ones fitted. Will make it look a bit better.

 

I spent virtually all weekend in mine, weather was great. Panteras are super cars, very approachable, and get thumb's up all around when I'm in it. (Some are sort of 'put off' or intimidated by the F car on occasion.)

For the record, mine is 'dark green' (factory name) very late 74, about the last 6 months of production for US. One owner for 31 years (until I got it).

Very stock, made some stealthy upgrades, but the most visible ones include the Euro GTS 10" Campys. Upped the distributor, hand made headers, GTS exhaust, adjustable suspension. Fun car.

I'm 'hosting' a little kids 12th birthday party this Friday at the garage at the 'honoree's' request. He's a cool kid, loves cars, Pantera is his fave.

With other kids, I'm always curious which car they'll flock to. Even though the Pantera is the oldest car I have, it ranks very high with youth.

 

I absolutely love Panteras! I see one of them local to me from time-to-time and have always thought it had such classic lines; very ahead of it's time in terms of it's styling.

Those of us on the Pantera forum have some complaints with it, but it is worth reading if you can find the mag

My brother had one about 20 years ago. I had quite a bit of access to it, and truth be told, I could not drive it anywhere (or have it parked on my driveway) without it getting far more attention than I found desirable. Also, it was so loud that I needed to wear ear plugs if I drove it more than a few miles (no, it wasn't stock). Also, the Hemmings's article mentions cheap engine parts (true), but any Pantera non-engine part was very expensive.

Expensive compared to what? There are several suppliers US and Euro and all are veryt affordable. Yes there are odd expensive items but 95% of parts are affordable and easy to find. Just look-up people like Wilkinson's and Hall online catalogue.

For starters $7,000+ for a driver's front fender in 1991 (that's $11,000 today). In addition this is when a complete Pantera could easily be purchased for $30,000. But let me ask, what would that driver's front fender cost today?

 

Paul, That sound a bit high to me. One of the Pantera guys flipped his and the bodyshop managed to salvage the fenders...For reference sake what would a Boss302, or a HemiSuperbee or a 355 fender go for??? I know a local guy needed a windsheild moulding for a HemiCuda (unique part) ended-up paying over 3k for. As stated overall it is an affordable exotic, with affordable horsepower upgrades. Most of the Pantera guys do their own work. As I said the odd parts are expensive, biut overall an affordable exotic.

 

De Tomaso prices:

A guy I know paid some kind of world record for 16 N.O.S. Mangusta lug nuts, and they still cost less than off the shelf, made a million of 'em Ferrari lug bolts.

 

This was 19-20 years ago, and it was a reliable body shop. They accidentally damaged the fender, and their insurance paid for it. My brother had it in the shop for a complete repaint ($8,000 or so), and as he didn't have to pay for the fender, he did not go through any negotiations about the fender's cost. Shortly after it was finished, he was injured while driving an SUV, and he sold his Pantera.
