ATA BOY Steve!!! See boys, it's just nuts and bolts. Lefty loosy, righty tighty. Though as Steve found out the allen bolts for the cv joints are put on gorilla tight. When I removed mine I had a 16" long ratchet handle, with a 3' long cheater bar on the end of that, to break those bad boys loose. Sweet. Well come on, spill the beans Steve. What did you do?
Pretty simple actually... if you pull the bolts from the chassis brace that the cable attaches too, with the cable still attached, you can swing the brace toward the front of the car and it clears the bottom of the gearbox completely. When putting the GB back in, its simply a matter of having someone to push and hold it out of the way again. Taking that e-brake cable out would be a HUGE PITA and blow at least an hour dickin around with disassembling the whole right side caliper & rotor assembly. Not to mention all the time blown to put it all back together! I took a pic that shows what i'm talking about.
AWESOME! Thanks for sharing that. Like we talked about, EVERY little thing helps. Now you have a nice short cut, for the next guy to use, which makes the job that much easier. The 348 Brotherhood kicks ass!
That's what its all about! So far i'm feeling pretty confident, and I would be comfortable if I were to help someone else do this. Its intimidating being a Ferrari and all, but you're right, its still just nuts and bolts! Forza 348 Brotherhood! BTW, I still need to know what you want me to do about the hotel for you.. and Bruce? Tuesday night thru Thursday night?
They are hex cap screws, I believe they are "supposed to be" 8mm, but there was a lot of slop, so we used a 5/16" allen socket which was a much more tighter fit. The nuts are 17mm. There is NO WAY you could get them off with a allen wrench!! LMAO!! It took 24" of 1/2" drive extensions (through the wheelwell), a 18" 1/2" drive breaker bar, and more ballz than I could have possible imagined to break those suckers loose! Clearly there had to be some badass Loctite on there too! We tried to use 250 pounds of pressure with an air impact, those bolts just laughed at that!! Have you removed the fill plug for your gear oil before? multiply that amount of force times 3!!
Thanks Steve. As for the filler plug for the gear oil, I had no trouble at all removing it...I mean it was on there tight, but I didn't have to over-exert and it loosened pretty easily...it must not have been on tight to begin with
I didn't have too much trouble with mine either, but I"d try some penetrant followed by some short shots with an impact if needed. Find some hex bar that fits the plug, or even a couple nuts of the right size jammed together onto a large bolt (think that's what I used). Glad to hear you're making good progress, Steve! Even though my halfshaft coupling bolts were not overly tight, it took me a couple hours just to get them all off, due to access issues.
Well, the 1st time I changed my GB oil, my fill plug was SO tight that when it broke loose, it sent me flying across my garage!! Back when I talked about that, it seemed like most people had a similar experience. Let me put it this way about the CV bolts, I could not break them loose, my best friend Phil has helped me with every bit of this project so far, and he saved me on that. It took every bit of his 5'10" 195 lbs of military developed brawn to break them loose. He said that after each one broke, he saw stars!! lol He and I have been working on cars for 25+ years, neither of us have ever experienced anything like that!! There had to be some wicked strong thread-locker on there.
Lol!!! You havent seen tight bolts until you see how tight some of the bolts get on our underground mining machines. We have an 1" drive 17mm socket. Just incase we need to get an 1" rattle gun or breaker bar on a 10mm bolt.
I've got about 4k miles on the car since you welded the clutch shaft. It just recently developed some noise and the gearbox needs to come out anyways for an inspection. For the time being it's parked. I've been busying myself with a GT4 that I recently picked up and a major on a friends 348 which we just finished up. Toss in the 9-5 job and grad school and there's not much time left for F-chat these days. Steve sorry to hear about the GB issue hopefully it will be patched up soon. I would join you guys but I'll be in the wrong city this weekend......Reno!
Hey, I'm glad it worked for you. I do not think there is the runout problem Joe had especially because your noise is new. The gear is not coming off that shaft. If you got noises the first step is to check the sidebearings. These cars are starting to see higher mileage just because of the years in service. Remember to post up the source of you noise. I have never seen the input shaft bearing blow up like Steve's. Hope this is an isolated incidence and not a new thing we are going to start seeing as the mileage gets high.
did not know that blew in your box. So that's two with mainshaft bearing failure. Steve has 75k miles. what do you have?
