Hi fellers, I was wondering if there might be any brothers in the Houston area that, with any free time, might be willing to scope out a car. The car is this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1979-FERRARI-308-GTS-SYPDER-LEATHER-RARE-ONLY-32K-MILES_W0QQitemZ400111712329QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks?hash=item5d28843849 Yes...I know it's an Ebay car but here's the funny thing...I was seriously considering this car a couple of years ago and, at that time, it had all of its service records, or so I was told. In the end, I ended up buying a 328, but might be interested in once-again considering this car IF one of the brotherhood gave it an initial "thumbs up" and it passed a PPI. It seems very clean, just like it did two years ago, BUT we all know that means nothing. The sales guys at the dealership do not seem too knowledgable (not a good sign) but, again, I was thinking that if there were any brothers who might be willing to take a look at the car...well...who needs an astute sales guy?! Anyway...just thought I'd ask, and thank you for any consideration. My best, Scott
Don't fall in love with the low miles, 90% of speedos of this era broke. It looks like a repaint and I don't think that is a Ferrari color... The interior looks like it has been redone and not done well...
Sorry I also only have negative comments. An ECONO battery? Abrasive tape poorly installed on the pedals? Ditto on the drivers seat, the side bolster by door is crushed down. It is also crushed down on my car, but it's smooth, not lumpy like this one appears. It's pretty though. But I can't get over what they did the the pedals. .98 cents of grip tape?
Check with Big Tex - he is from that part of the world and is EXTREMELY knowledgeable aobut these cars. Surprised he hasnt chimed in already!!! PDG
Hi guys Argh!! Man...you guys have such good eyes! I obvioulsy noticed the "problematic" pedal covers (nothing that some aluminum ones couldn't fix!) but I didn't even notice the bolster. As far as the paint...hmm...yes...if you look at the rear cavallino, it appears as though there may be some red showing around it?...or I wasn't sure if this was a "photography issue". I thought that this was/is perhaps the Serra Blue color that the car surrently sports?Anyway...thanks so much for the help a opinions; it's great having you guys looking out for one of your own ;-) My best, Scott
You can put the two rubber pedal covers back on it for like $30 at Ricambi.... Of course that's a Ferrari color!! Blue........ If you can get me a physical address for them, I'm off tomorrow......that appears to be a brand new interior kit but poorly installed over "old foam", a big no no, and that's where all those wrinkles come from.....maybe Lady Valeria could rework it all for you, while I spray the gold wheel accents black!!
It may be a great car but grip tape makes me worry that one owner thought .98 cent fixes were appropriate for this car and they may have cheaped out in other areas. Or someone liked the color and thought it was cute?
Hey Big Tex Here is the physical address...I think: Texas Direct Auto 1915 Highway 90 A Missouri City, TX 77489 281-499-8200 I think Barry may stop by and look at the car, too. But the more eyes and expertise the merrier! I really appreciate it! Scott
That interior kit wasn't cheap, no matter where he bought it.......we'll try to get 'the story' and let him know we are all laughing at him, on the Internets!!
I will be in Austin next week and have considered making my return out of Houston so I look at this 308. Any help is appreciated. CC
Is it still there? This is an old thread, and you just missed a dry sump '77 on ebay!!! Scott bought it.....come on down though, I know where another 1977 wet sump sits....yea, it looks like it still there......come on by....
I saw that this AM. Unless it needs a total rework it seems like he got a great deal. I will only have a couple hours the afternoon of the 18th available and a flight out of Hobby @ 6:35 so not a lot of time. This Texas Direct car looks nice and they are not far from Hobby; but we all know about pics on the internet. I was hoping someone local had looked at it. CC
There's another thread on this car, some chatters DID go by and look, it needs some love.... It's a carbed, but Catalyst car......rather a mixed bag, IMO. But glad to run you or meet you out there, that's Stafford, southwest of Houston really..... I office right next to Hobby Airport though, literally at the end of the runway...
Thanks for the offer to meet up and info on the car. I will try and find the other thread. Maybe that 77 you mentioned... GTB or GTS? CC
Curtis, I was seriously considering buying this car a couple of years ago and, as you see on this thread, was recently tempted again. When I was contemplating the car back in 2008, it had all of its service records, though I can't remember when the last Major was (I'm quite certain it was due). Now...all the records have been lost, and I'm pretty sure the car has been sitting for at least two years (the odometer still reads 32K like it did two years ago). Also, the ghastly yellow tape on the pedals was not there, and it didn't have an econo battery; can't recall if the seats looked "smashed down" but... Anyway...in this market, considering the "off color" (though I really like it), and needing a major with NO service records to verify mileage, I think this dealership is sniffing glue in asking what they are...IF they want to move the car. Good luck, Scott p.s. Some on here theorize that the car has been repainted. If you look at the pic on eBay, the back of the car and right around the cavallino, there seems to be a suggestion of red. Not sure if this is a "photographic trick", or a second-rate paint job.
Shame about the records if that is the case. I am hoping the tape is there to "protect" the new pedals. I saw the hints of red that you mention, though I think that may be reflection from the tail lights. I will likely give the guy a call and see what I can learn. With as much traveling as I have been doing for work I might as well take a little time for myself. CC
Tex - I will PM you with my travel plans and phone number. Probably sometime Thursday.Your GTB lead has me curious. CC
